Roanoke Falls to #8 Cortland St., 17-13
Roanoke fell to #8-ranked Cortland St., 17-13 Friday afternoon at Kerr Stadium. The loss dropped the Maroons to a 3-3 on the year, while Red Dragons improved their record to 5-1.
The Maroons started out strong as they took an early 2-0 lead with goals scored by Gina Valles (South Windsor, CT, Westminster ) and Meegan Rourke (Greenwich, CT, Millbrook School). Within the next three minutes, Cortland St. fired back to tie the game at 2-2.
Roanoke scored two more goals with 19-minutes remaining in the first half to regain the lead, 4-2.
In the ensuing seven minutes, Cortland St. scored four unanswered goals to take their first lead of the game, with Maria Di Fato and Lindsay Abbott contributing two goals each. The Maroons scored three of the final five goals to close the half with a score of 8-7.
To begin the second half, Cortland St. took advantage of a man-up situation and scored two quick goals to increase the lead to three, 11-8. Although the Maroons contributed five more goals in the second half, they were not able to get within three of the Red Dragons.
Cortland St. held an edge over Roanoke in total shots (31-21), groundballs (21-19) and was 7-for-10 in clear attempts. Roanoke held a slight edge in draw controls (17-15), but were only 1-for-3 in free position shots, compared to Cortland St., who was 3-for-7 in that category.
Valles (4 g, 4 a), Jamie Golden (Timonium, MD, Notre Dame) (3 g), and Rourke (5 g) dominated the scoreboard for the Maroons, scoring 12 of the team's 13 total goals. Rourke also dominated in draw controls, winning a total of six on the day and Melissa Madalon (Darien, CT, Darien) was able to cause five turnovers. Laura Zdziarski (Gainesville, FL, Buchholz) contributed a solid effort with 10 saves in goal.
Ashley Cook stepped up for Cortland St. contributing four key goals that helped to lead her team to victory. Alexis Egeberg, Lindsay Abbott, and Maria Di Fato also tallied three goals each with Abbot winning seven total draw controls. Gina Campese also contributed three assists for the afternoon. Ally Levy, goalie for Cortland St., had six total saves to help her team close out the game with a win.
The women return to action this Sunday, March 20 to host Christopher Newport. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Kerr Stadium.
