Roanoke Holds Off Captains, 13-12 in Non-Conference Action
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke pulled out a win over Christopher Newport, 13-12 Sunday afternoon at Kerr Stadium. The win helped the Maroons propel their record to 4-3, while the Captains dropped to a 7-1 mark on the year.
Roanoke started off strong once again, with an early goal scored by Gina Valles (South Windsor, CT, Westminster ). The game remained close as both teams traded goals. In the eight remaining minutes of the first half, the Maroons scored five unanswered goals to increase their lead to five, 10-5.
However, with three minutes left in the half the Captains took advantage of their man-up situation by scoring three goals, with two goals contributed by Ashton Marshall and a last second goal contributed by Meghan Harkey, to close the gap to 10-8.
With 19-minutes remaining in the second half, Rachel Tomlinson of Christopher Newport scored a goal to get the Captains to within one with a score of 10-9. The Maroons never allowed the Captains to tie the game until the five minute mark. A yellow card against Roanoke gave Christopher Newport the chance to score two goals to tie the game with four minutes left.
Needing a goal late in the game, Meegan Rourke (Greenwich, CT, Millbrook School) scored her fourth goal of the contest with 2:39 remaining. The defense finished strong and held off a late attack by CNU to lead the Maroons to victory.
Roanoke out-shot Christopher Newport 40-28 and held a slight edge over the Captains in groundballs (29-26), draw controls (17-9) and were 11-for-14 in clear attempts. The Captains were 14-for-17 in that category.
Rourke and Kathleen Wager (Lexington, VA, Rockbridge County)each tallied four goals each, contributing to eight of the Maroon's 13 goals. Valles (2 g, 2 a) dominated the draw controls for Roanoke with a total of seven and caused turnovers with four. Laura Zdziarski (Gainesville, FL, Buchholz) remained strong in goal with eight saves on the day.
Ashton Marshall (5 g) and Rachel Tomlinson (4 g) lead their team with a combined total of nine goals between the two of them. Kaitlin Quigley took control of draw controls for her team with four. Hannah Wilkerson, goalie for Christopher Newport, displayed a solid effort for the Captains with 17 saves in goal.
The women with host #11-ranked Washington and Lee this Thursday, March 24. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Kerr Stadium.
