Washington and Lee pulls away in ODAC win over Roanoke in Women's Lacrosse
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke fell to #14 Washington and Lee, 17-10 in ODAC action at Kerr Stadium Thursday evening. The women drop to 4-4 overall, 1-1 in the ODAC, while the Generals improved to 5-4, 2-0 to remain atop the standings.
The Maroons held a 22-17 groundball edge and were successful in 9-of-10 clear attempts. The Generals were 12-of-18 in clears, 5-for-10 in free-position shots and held a slight shots advantage, 31-30.
Washington and Lee scored the first goal just four minutes into the contest as Wilton Megargel's netted a free-position shot to take the early lead. Gina Valles (South Windsor, CT, Westminster ), who led Roanoke with five goals and an assist, tied the contest nearly two minutes later as she fired a shot from behind the crease to make it, 1-1.
The Generals responded by scoring six of the next seven goals in the ensuing 18-minutes to take a commanding five-goal lead, 7-2. Megargel found Margaret Klein at the 20:37 mark to take the lead for good and started the W&L run.
Roanoke started the second half the same as they ended the first, with a goal. Meegan Rourke (Greenwich, CT, Millbrook School) scored off an assist from Allison Bonanno (Ridgewood, NJ, Ridgewood) just before halftime and Valles scored a minute into the second stanza to make it, 7-4.
Klein scored back-to-back Generals goals on free-position attempts to push their lead back to five. Valles answered back with consecutive goals and assisted on Rourke's goal to cut the Maroons deficit to 9-7 with 19:21 remaining. The assist was #100 for Valles' career and broke the school record in that category.
But W&L managed to pull away, scoring five-straight goals in the following five minutes, including two man-up goals to keep Roanoke at bay the remainder of the game.
Two Generals posted career-high numbers, as Klein finished the contest with a career-high five goals and McKaig chipped in a career-high six points (2g, 4a). Mathews contributed four goals and two assists.
In addition to her offensive numbers, Valles collected five groundballs and caused two turnovers. She currently ranks among the best in NCAA Div. III history in scoring (336; 21st), caused turnovers (102; 21st) and draw controls (166; 14th). She also moved into sixth on the school's career groundballs list (211).
Rourke had three goals, five groundballs, three caused turnovers and a career-high nine draw controls. Kathleen Wager (Lexington, VA, Rockbridge County) won four draw controls and Melissa Madalon (Darien, CT, Darien) totaled two groundballs and two caused turnovers.
Laura Zdziarski (Gainesville, FL, Buchholz) (2-2) and Lyndsey Jones (Easton, MD, St. Peter and Paul) combined for eight saves on the night for Roanoke. Katherine Farrar (5-4) finished with 13 saves for Washington and Lee.
The women return to action on Wednesday, March 30 as they travel to Lynchburg College in a pivotal ODAC match-up. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Shellenberger Field.
