Roanoke falls to Lynchburg, 12-10 in ODAC action

Roanoke fell to Lynchburg, 12-10 in ODAC action at Lynchburg Wednesday night. The Maroon women drop to 4-5 overall, 1-2 in the conference, while the Hornets improved to 7-3, 3-0 to remain undefeated in the ODAC.

Roanoke held a slight advantage in shots, 30-28, and was successful in 13-of-17 clear attempts. Lynchburg was successful in 15-of-17 clear attempts, but the Maroons and the Hornets remained at a standstill for groundballs with 27 each.

The Hornets took the lead, 2-0 within the first six minutes of the contest with goals scored by Morgan Logue and Kendall Adkin. The Maroons quickly fired back with four unanswered goals with Carolyn Miller (Clinton, MD, St. Mary's Ryken) and Meegan Rourke (Greenwich, CT, Millbrook School) each contributing two goals to give Roanoke its first lead of the game, 4-2. The Maroons were able to keep the lead up to the four-minute mark, where the Hornets scored two goals to tie the game 6-6 going into the second half.

Lynchburg scored five unanswered goals to give the Hornets the lead 11-6 to begin the second half. At the 10-minute mark, Rourke gave the Maroons their first goal of the second stanza to lead the team on a 4-1 scoring streak. Although Roanoke rallied at the end of the second half, they were unable to regain the lead.

Rourke lead the Maroons in scoring for the day with five goals in addition to two groundballs and three caused-turnovers. Miller also supplied the Maroons with two goals and three assists. Gina Valles (South Windsor, CT, Westminster ), currently ranking among the best in NCAA Division III history in scoring, tallied another goal and two assists in today's contest to increase her number to 337 career points. Lyndsey Jones (Easton, MD, St. Peter and Paul) gave a solid effort in goal for the Maroons with seven saves on the day.

Adkin and Lesley Buckingham controlled the scoring for the Hornets with three goals each. Sarah Shannon and Logue also contributed to their team's victory with two goals each. Shannon also recovered seven groundballs to help her team. Christina Tran stood strong in goal with 15 saves, giving her team the defensive edge that it needed.

The Women return to action this Saturday, April 2 as they travel to Guilford. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
