Roanoke Cruises Past Randolph, 24-1
Roanoke defeated Randolph in ODAC action, Tuesday night at Kerr Stadium with a final score of 24-1. The win helped the Maroons to continue their winning streak and propel their record to 6-5 while the WildCats dropped to a 1-9 mark on the year.
An early goal scored by Randolph's Samie Maggard gave the WildCats a 1-0 lead to begin the game. With 25 minutes remaining in the first half, Roanoke's Meegan Rourke (Greenwich, CT, Millbrook School) scored two goals to overcome the early deficit and give the Maroons the lead. The Maroons were able to score 14 consecutive goals to close out the half with a 16-1 lead. In the first stanza, Allison Bonanno (Ridgewood, NJ, Ridgewood) contributed four goals, Gina Valles (South Windsor, CT, Westminster ) added three goals, and Emily Knade (Easton, MD, St. Peter and Paul) gave an additional two goals to help the Maroons obtain a comfortable lead.
The Maroons came out strong once again with Rourke scoring two goals to begin the second half and increase Roanoke's lead, 18-1. Roanoke then scored six more unanswered goals to close the game, 24-1.
Rourke and Bonanno lead the Maroons in scoring with four goals each. Rourke also donated two assists and three caused turnovers to help lead her team to victory. Valles and Knade each contributed three goals. Valles' point total on the season thus far currently resides at 72 with 354 career points. Her career points currently rank her at 19th on the NCAA all-time scoring list. Carolyn Miller (Clinton, MD, St. Mary's Ryken) donated two goals and seven assists to give the Maroons the offensive edge that it needed.
Laura Zdziarski (Gainesville, FL, Buchholz) and Cristina Scichilone (South Yarmouth, MA, Nauset Regional) totaled three saves for the Maroons to help maintain a strong defense. Ashley Stevens, goalie for the WildCats, gave a solid effort and tallied five saves on the day.
The women return to action on Saturday, April 9 as they take on Stevenson on the road. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
