Stevenson Slips Past Roanoke, 15-9

STEVENSON, Md. --- Roanoke fell to Stevenson on the road Saturday afternoon, 15-9. The loss drops the Maroons to a 7-6 record on the year, while the Mustangs improve to 9-5.

The Maroons held a 23-12 advantage in groundballs and were successful in 14-of-19 clear attempts. The Mustangs were successful in 16-of-21 clear attempts, 4-for-8 in free-position shots, and held a slight advantage in shots, 30-28.

Roanoke started off strong with a goal scored by Jamie Golden (Timonium, MD, Notre Dame) to give the Maroons the lead in the first two minutes of the game. Stevenson then fired back with eight unanswered goals to take the lead, 8-1. With nine minutes remaining in the first half, Golden netted her second goal of the game andEmily Knade (Easton, MD, St. Peter and Paul) and Carolyn Miller (Clinton, MD, St. Mary's Ryken) each contributed a goal to make the score 8-3. Lisa Baker and Olivia Baker each scored at the two-minute mark to close out the first half, 10-4.

The Maroons began the second stanza with a quick goal from Kathleen Wager (Lexington, VA, Rockbridge County) to make the score 10-5. With 20 minutes remaining in the half, Stevenson scored two goals to increase its lead to 12-5. Roanoke fired back with four unanswered goals in an attempt to close the gap, making the score 12-9. The Maroons were unable to pull within more than 3 goals and closed out the game 15-9.

Golden and Wager lead the Maroons in scoring with two goals each. Meegan Rourke (Greenwich, CT, Millbrook School) dominated with 5 groundballs and 3 caused turnovers. Wager also led her team in draw controls with three. Both goalies for Roanoke, Lyndsey Jones (Easton, MD, St. Peter and Paul) and Cristina Scichilone (South Yarmouth, MA, Nauset Regional), gave a solid effort with a total of nine saves on the day.

L. Baker of the Mustangs dominated the scoreboard with five goals. Marissa Meiklejohn (3 goals) and Emily Gartrell (2 goals) also helped contribute to Stevenson's offense. Jenny Schroeder, goalie for the Mustangs, had 17 total saves to help her team close out the game with a win.

The women return to action this Wednesday, April 13 as they take on Mary Washington on the road. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
