Women's Lacrosse nets last five goals to down Virginia Wesleyan, 12-8
VIRGINIA BEACH --- Roanoke scored the final five goals of the game to down Virginia Wesleyan, 12-8 in the final Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest of the season Saturday afternoon. The Maroons improve to 10-5 overall, 7-2 in the ODAC, while the Marlins slip to 6-10, 4-5 in conference play.

The Maroons, winners of six-straight, have 10 wins for the 20th time in program-history. For head coach Mary Schwartz, its the sixth time over the last seven years her team has accomplished that feat. Schwartz is now only five wins shy of becoming the winningest women's lacrosse coach for Roanoke. Tracy Coyne (1990-96) is the all-time wins leader for the program with 91 victories.

VWC held the edge in the shooting column (23-19) and groundballs (22-20) but the Maroons won 14-of-22 draw controls while coming up with 10 saves from freshman goalie Lauren Curtin in the ODAC victory to clinch the #3 seed.

Allison Bonanno led RC with three goals and three assists in addition to three draw controls. Darragh Evarts netted four goals and collected four groundballs while Jamie Golden tallied two goals for the Maroons. Rosie Knisley and Kathleen Wager had a goal and an assist each.

Bonanno and Golden scored for Roanoke to take an early 2-1 lead before the Marlins racked up three unanswered goals to take a 4-2 lead with 7:48 to go in the first half. The Maroons ended the half strong, scoring the final three goals to take a slim 5-4 halftime edge.

Virginia Wesleyan slowly gained momentum in the second half, scoring four of the first six goals in an 17-minute span to give the Marlins the lead, 8-7 with just under 13-minutes remaining in regulation.

But the Maroons, who just rallied late to knock off Bridgewater earlier this week, reeled off five-straight goals in the final 12-minutes of play to seal the victory in the regular season ODAC-finale.

The women will travel to Newport News to take on Christopher Newport Sunday, April 22 at 1 p.m. to close out the regular season. The Maroons will host the ODAC Quarterfinal contest on Saturdy, April 28. Game time is TBA.
