Women's Lacrosse Edged by #18 Mary Washington, 15-14 on Wednesday
ORLANDO, FL - The Roanoke College women's lacrosse team was edged out on Wednesday afternoon by the #18 ranked University of Mary Washington, 15-14. The Maroons now have a record of 0-2, while the Eagles are now 3-2 overall.

The Eagles jumped on the board first in the neutral-site game. Keller Torrey found the back of the net in the first 2:30 of the contest to give Mary Washington a 1-0 lead. Roanoke responded just four minutes later with two goals that were scored just 20 second apart. Darragh Evarts scored off of a pass from Allison Bonanno, while Morgan Conroy quickly got one of her own, off a dish from Evarts to give the Maroons a 2-1 lead. The Eagles scored two more goals to reclaim the lead over the next five minutes. At the 15:49 mark, Roanoke and Mary Washington traded two goals each, with the Eagles getting a player-up goal at 13:46 to hold on to the one goal, 5-4 lead.

The Eagles scored three unanswered goals to extend their lead to four 8-4. Bonanno got her first goal of the game with just a minute to spare in the half, while UMW's Emily Atkinson scored one more before the end of the half to allow the Eagles to enter the locker room with a 9-5 lead.

The Maroons took control in the second half of the contest. Evarts found the back of the net in the first minute of the period. The Eagles answered with two goals to go ahead by five, 11-6 with 24:00 to play. Over the next 10 minutes, the Maroons outscored the Eagles 4-1, with Meghan Gerrie and Evarts finding the back of the net, as well as Bonanno netting two more goals, pulling within two 12-10.

Corinne Wiederkehr and Atkinson scored for Mary Washington to extend the lead to four, 14-10 with 9:44 to play. Within a minute and a half of the Eagles' last goal, Roanoke scored three times, with Evarts, Bonanno and Lilly Judge finding the back of the net, getting within one of tying the game. UMW's Keller Torrey scored with 3:31 to play, to go up 15-13. Roanoke was only able score one more goal, as Jamie Golden took a pass from Evarts and put in the back of the net, as the Maroons fell 15-14 to the #18 ranked Eagles.

Darragh Evarts led the Maroons in scoring with five goals, along with her three assists. She also had a team high tying six ground balls, as Jamie Golden also finished with six. Second in scoring for Roanoke was Allison Bonanno, who tallied four goals and a team high five assists. Lauren Curtin played all 60 minutes in goal and made nine saves.

Emily Adkinson scored a team high four goals for the Eagles on Wednesday. She was followed by Angela Sperbeck, Keller Torrey, and Corinne Wiederkehr, who each finished with three goals each. All of the goals for Mary Washington were unassisted, except for one where Torrey earned the lone assist.

Mary Washington led in shots for the game (36-28), as well as free position shots (15-3). Roanoke had the advantage in ground balls (30-25) and draw controls (30-25).

The Maroons return to action on Sunday, March 10th as they play host to #2 ranked Salisbury University. That contest is scheduled for a 2:00 PM start.
