Women's Lacrosse Rallies to Defeat Lynchburg, 13-11 in ODAC Play
LYNCHBURG - After trailing through most of the second half, the Roanoke College women's lacrosse team rallied to defeat Lynchburg College 13-11 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Wednesday evening. The Maroons now have a record of 7-6; 6-1 in ODAC play, while the Hornets sit with a mark of 7-6; 4-4 in the ODAC.

With her one assist on the evening, Allison Bonanno set a new Roanoke College career assists record, dishing out her 133rd assist. She passes Gina Valles '11 who previously held the record of 132. Bonanno also now ranks third all-time in career assists in the ODAC. She ranks behind Leslie Bogart of Washington and Lee who had 136 assists in her career. The current ODAC career assists record holder (Meagan Dicave, VWC '02) is ahead of Bonanno by just 43 assists. Bonanno has tallied 55 assists this season, with three regular season games left to play.

Nicole Zelnik netted the first goal for the Maroons just three minutes into the first half, scoring unassisted. Over the course of the next two minutes, Lynchburg's Katherine Francis scored back to back goals to give Lynchburg a 2-1 lead. Roanoke responded with two goals of their own as Zelnik and Allison Bonanno found the back of the net to reclaim the lead. Over the course of the first half, for every goal that Roanoke scored, Lynchburg would tally one in return. The two teams finished the first half locked at 7-7.

Just as she had in the first half, three minutes into the period, Zelnik scored, this time off of a pass from Rosie Knisely to take an 8-7 lead. Lynchburg then went on a 4-0 run, as Carley Dobson, Bri Slate Caroline Kilby and Francis all scored, putting the Maroons in a 10-7 deficit. However, the Maroons were long from out of the game. Roanoke went on a 5-0 tear, as Jamie Golden, Bonanno scored one goal each, while Darragh Evarts tallied three, giving the Maroons a 12-10 lead over the Hornets. Lynchburg's Julie Will scored with 2:12 to play, pulling the Hornets within one. However, Rosie Knisley scored a free position shot with just three seconds on the clock to seal the 13-11 victory for the Maroons.

Darragh Evarts led the Maroons in scoring, tallying five goals, while also dishing out one assist. Nicole Zelnik and Allison Bonanno finished with three goals apiece. Kathleen Wager topped all players in the game with four ground balls. Lauren Curtin picked up the win in goal, tallying six saves over 60:00 minutes of play.

Lynchburg's Katherine Francis also finished the game with five goals, off of nine shots. She was followed by carley Dobson who tallied two goals on the night. Katie Seidel led all players in assists with two over the course of the game. Hailey Bossert was tabbed with the loss between the pipes, giving up 13 goals, while making eight saves.

The game proved to be a tight one in many statistical categories. The Maroons held a slight edge in draw controls (13-12), ground balls (17-16), and clears (13-11). The Hornets topped the Maroons in total shots, 30-29.

The Maroons return to action on Saturday, April 13th as they take on Virginia Wesleyan in Kerr Stadium. There are a number of exciting events going on during the Saturday game, as it will also serve as senior day for the Maroons. Also as a part of Alumni Weekend, there will be a special ceremony to retire the jersey of Gina Valles '11. That contest is scheduled for a 12:00 PM
