Roanoke Drops Season Opener to #1 Salisbury University
SALISBURY, MD - The Roanoke College women's lacrosse team fell 17-2 in its season opener to #1 ranked Salisbury University on Sunday afternoon.  The Maroons open with a record of 0-1, while the Sea Gulls are now 1-0.
 
Salisbury's Shannon Carta scored three of the first four goals in the contest.  She scored her first from a free position shot in the first minute and a half in the game.  The Sea Gulls scored seven times in the first half, before the Maroons got their first goal.  At the 1:44 mark in the first half, Claire Feeney scored an unassisted goal to cut the deficit to six, 7-1.  Bethany Baer scored one more goal for Salisbury in the final 30 seconds in the first half, ending the period with a 8-1 Sea Gull lead.
 
The second half started as it ended, with Baer scoring a goal for Salisbury.  The Sea Gulls scored six goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half, including two each from Shelby Nemecek and Megan Wallenhorst.  Allison Bonanno, a 2013 All-Region performer, scored Roanoke's second goal of the game, unassisted with 4:58 to play in the second half.  The Sea Gulls scored two final goals to close out the contest, as Roanoke fell 17-2 in the season opener.
 
Claire Feeney and Allison Bonanno finished the game with one goal each.  Darragh Evarts led the team in shots with four, followed by Feeney with three.  Curtin played 44 minutes in goal, tallying 10 saves.
 
Shannon Carta led the Sea Gulls with four goals in the game, followed by Shelby Nemecek with three.  Katelyn Blondino tallied six shots, tying Nemecek in the category.  Ashton Wheatley played 53 minutes in goal, finishing with seven saves.
 
Salisbury led in draw controls (13-8), while Roanoke held the advantage in saves (12-7).  The Sea Gulls narrowly led in ground balls (15-13).
 
The Maroons return to action on Saturday, February 22nd as they take on #16 ranked Christopher Newport University on the road.  That contest is scheduled for a 4:00 PM start.
