Women's Lacrosse Defeats #16 Christopher Newport in Double Overtime Thriller
NEWPORT NEWS – The Roanoke College women's lacrosse team downed #16 Christopher Newport, 16-15 in an overtime thriller on Saturday.  The Maroons are now 1-1 on the season while the captains drop to 0-2 to start the year.
 
This is the Maroons first victory over a nationally ranked team since defeating St. John Fischer College 12-10 in overtime on March 3, 2010.
 
The Maroons jumped out hot out of the gate, scoring four goals in the first five minutes of the game.  Darragh Evarts notched the Maroons first goal on a free position shot, followed by an unassisted goal by Allison Bonanno at 27:18 to take a 2-0 lead.  Courtney McCartin scored the Maroons third goal of the game unassisted at 26:19.  Julia Galanto scored the fourth goal of the run off of an assist by Claire Feeney.  The Captains answered with three goals over the next 10 minutes of the game, coming from Ashton Marshall, Erin Callahan and Meghan Galvin.
 
Bonanno scored her second of the game, this time off of a free position shot to put the Maroons back ahead by two, 5-3 with 12:11 to play in the half.  Christopher Newport went on another 3-0 run, with Marshall scoring her second and third goals of the afternoon, giving the Captains their first lead of the game, 6-5.  Claire Feeney scored the equalizer with seven minutes to play in the half, off of  a free position shot.  Galvin put one more between the pipes for CNU to close out the first half, as the Captains led 7-6 after the first 30.
 
In the first two minutes of the second half, Bonanno scored her third goal, unassisted, to tie the game at 7-7.  Roanoke and Christopher Newport traded two goals each over the next 10 minutes, with Feeney and Evarts scoring the goals for the Maroons, tying the game at 9-9.  A minute after Evarts scored her second goal, the Captains went on another 3-0 run, as Galvin, Callahan and Johnson all found the back of the net again. 
 
Bonanno and Evarts each scored again off free position shots by the 10:59 mark, bringing the Maroons back within one, 13-12.  Seven minutes passed without a goal for either team, until Ashton Marshall scored once more, this time with an assist from Kylie Chaplin.  The Maroons, now down by two, pulled within one after a man-up goal from Morgan Conroy, scoring with 2:28 to play.  Roanoke trailed by one until eleven seconds remained, when Claire Feeney scored off of a free position shot, tying the game at 14-14, sending the game into overtime.
 
Halfway through the six minute overtime, the Captains struck first as Callahan netted the go-ahead goal with an assist from Galvin.  But, Roanoke wasn't out of it, as a minute later Darragh Evarts scored an unassisted goal, tying the game at 15-15.  Neither team could score in the final two minutes, sending the game to a second overtime period.  It took another five minutes until Claire Feeney slipped one past the keeper, with an assist by Evarts, giving Roanoke the 16-15 win over #16 Christopher Newport.
 
Darragh Evarts led the Maroons with five goals while dishing out one assist.  Allison Bonanno tallied four goals on the night, while taking 10 shots on goal.  Claire Feeney finished with four goals and one assist, while Courtney McCartin notched one goal. Lauren Curtin played all 70-plus minutes in goal, finishing with 15 saves.
 
The Captains were led by Ashton Marshall and Meaghan Galvin who each finished with four goals.  Galvin led in assists with three, while Marshall and Kylie Chaplin each had three.  Hanna Slough played the complete game between the pipes, making 12 saves on the evening.
 
Christopher Newport led in ground balls 27-17, as well as clears 14-13.  Roanoke won the battle of draw controls (21-14), but also led in turnovers 19-13. 
 
The Maroons return to action on March 4th as they play their third consecutive ranked team, facing #17 St. John Fisher College during the team's spring break trip to Puerto Rico.  That game is scheduled for a 2:00 PM start.
