Women's Lacrosse Edged By Mary Washington 13-12 on Saturday
FREDERICKSBURG – The Roanoke College women's lacrosse team fell in non-conference action on Saturday, after being narrowly edged by Mary Washington, 13-12.  The Maroons now have a record of 2-3, while the Eagles are now 3-1.
 
The Maroons got on the board first in the contest, as Claire Feeney scored in the opening minute and a half.  Her goal, assisted by Darragh Evarts, gave the Maroons the initial 1-0 advantage.  The Eagles answered with two goals over the next four minutes to claim a 2-1 lead with 25:26 to play in the first half.  Just 13 seconds later, Darragh Evarts tied the game at 2-2, with a goal off of a free position shot. 
 
The Evarts goal led to three straight tallies from Roanoke, including goals from Morgan Conroy, Briana Storey and Allison Bonanno.  With 16:37 left in the first half, the Maroons led 5-2.  Mary Washington came back with three goals over the next 10 minutes, including two from Jenna Petrucelli, to tie the game at 5-5 with 6:18 to play. The two teams traded a pair of goals each over the final four minutes of the half, with Evarts scoring both of the Maroons goals.  At halftime, Roanoke and Mary Washington were tied at 7-7.
 
The Eagles opened the second half with two goals, one from Emily Adkinson and the other from Katie Williams, taking a two-goal lead over the Maroons, 9-7.  Claire Feeney narrowed the deficit with a goal assisted by Bonanno at the 21:12 mark, as Roanoke only trailed by one, 10-9 at this point.  After another Mary Washington goal, Roanoke scored two more goals, one from Feeney and the other from Evarts, tying the game at 10-10 with 15:00 left to play.  Corinne Wiederkehr scored her third goal of the game just a minute later, reclaiming the lead for the Eagles, 11-10.
 
 In a two minute span starting at 11:10, the Maroons netted two goals.  First, Courtney McCartin slipped one past the keeper off of an assist from Bonanno to tie the game at 11:10.  At 9:57, Feeney netted the go-ahead goal on a free position shot to give the Maroons a 12-11 advantage.  The Maroons held the Eagles scoreless for the next five minutes until Wiederkehr scored the tying goal at 4:48.  Then, a little over a minute later, Megan Gersbeck scored the winning goal for Mary Washington, as Roanoke fell to the Eagles, 13-12 on the road.
 
Claire Feeney and Darragh Evarts led the team in scoring with four goals each, while Courtney McCartin, Briana Storey, Morgan Conroy and Allison Bonanno finished with one goal each.  Bonanno also tallied a team high four assists in the contest, with other two coming from Evarts.  Evarts also won nine draw controls.  Madison Murphy and Lauren Curtin each finished with four ground balls.  Curtin played all 60 minutes in net and tallied nine saves.
 
Corinne Weiderkehr led the Eagles with four goals, going along with two assists for a total of seven points.  Jenna Petrucelli followed with three goals off 10 shots.  Emily Atkinson finished with a team high four draw controls on the afternoon.  Kelly Dean played 46 minutes in goal, tallying six of the team's seven saves.
 
Roanoke led in both saves (10-7) and draw controls (14-13), while the two teams tied in ground balls with 18 each.
 
The Maroons return to action on Wednesday March 12th as they open Old Dominion Athletic Conference action against Lynchburg College at Kerr Stadium.  That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start.  If the Maroons pick up the victory, it will be the 100th win for head coach Mary Schwartz, who, with 99 wins, is the winningest coach in Roanoke College women's lacrosse history.
