Schwartz Picks Up 100th Victory With 14-8 Win Over Virginia Wesleyan
VIRGINIA BEACH – Roanoke College women's lacrosse coach Mary Schwartz earned her 100th career victory on Saturday afternoon as Roanoke defeated Virginia Wesleyan on the road, 14-8.  The Maroons now have a record of 3-3 and start ODAC play with a mark of 1-0, while the Marlins are now 2-4 overall with a 1-1 ODAC record.

Schwartz, who has been at the helm of the program for the past 10 years, has earned her 100th victory.  She is the winningest coach in Roanoke women's lacrosse history, as she passed Tracy Coyne (1990-96) last year, who had 91 career wins with the Maroons.  In her nine complete seasons, Schwartz has led the team to six 10-win seasons, including two 15-plus win campaigns that took the Maroons to the NCAA Tournament in 2007 and 2009.

The Maroons got on the board in the first two minutes as Claire Feeney scored off of a pass from Morgan Conroy.  Five minutes later, the duo paired up again for the same result, as Feeney scored her second goal of the game.  At the 22:40 mark, Brook Cabeceiras scored Virginia Wesleyan's first goal of the game, pulling the Marlins within one, 2-1.

Roanoke scored twice again before the 20:00 mark in the first half.  First, Briana Storey netted an unassisted goal, followed by Allison Bonanno who scored off of a pass from Feeney.  After the Marlins tallied a goal at the 15:40 mark, Roanoke scored three more times in the next three minutes.  Courtney McCartin scored off of a pass from Bonanno, while Storey and Feeney each scored in the 12 minute mark, unassisted.  Feeney scored three more times in the first half, while Allison Beames and Darragh Evarts each tallied goals in the period as well.  Virginia Wesleyan scored the last goal of the half, an unassisted cap from Natalie Furey with 24 seconds to play.  At the end of the first half, Roanoke held a 12-4 advantage.

Virginia Wesleyan scored the first two goals of the second half, one goal from Stacey Sank, assisted by Summer Moore, the other from Natalie Furey.  With  24 minutes to play, Roanoke still led 12-6.  After an 18 minute scoring drought from both teams, the Marlins' Cabeceiras scored her second goal of the game, pulling Virginia Wesleyan within five.  Roanoke's Julia Galanto scored the Maroons first goal of the half with 4:32 to play in the game.  After another Wesleyan goal, Claire Feeney scored her seventh goal of the game.  As the final horn sounded, Roanoke had won its first ODAC game of the season, 14-8 over the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan

Claire Feeney led the Maroons with seven goals on the afternoon, scoring off of a total of 12 shots.  She was followed by Briana Storey who tallied two, then five other Maroons who scored one goal each.  Darragh Evarts led the team with seven draw controls, followed by Allison Bonanno with four.  Madison Murphy, Evarts and Lauren Curtin each finished with three ground balls.  Curtin played all 60 minutes in net and tallied 22 saves.

Carla Williams led the Marlins in scoring with three goals, while Brooke Cabeceiras and Natalie Furey finished with two goals each.  Candace Carey led the team with three draw controls, while Cabeceiras finished with a team high four ground balls.

The Maroons return to action on Tuesday, March 18th as they host the #18 ranked College at Brockport for Pack the House Night.  The contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start.
