Women's Lacrosse Topped by Christopher Newport in Tuesday Contest
SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO – The Roanoke College women's lacrosse team fell to Christopher Newport, 14-11 on Tuesday afternoon in Bayamon Stadium.  The Maroons open the 2015 season with a record of 0-1, while the Captains are 2-2 so far this season.

Courtney McCartin led the Maroons in scoring with four goals on six shots, all of which were on gal.  She also scooped up two ground balls.  Claire Feeney and Mackenzie Haymaker finished the contest with two goals apiece.  Feeney, who was the second leading scorer on the 2014 squad (62g) took eight shots, five of which were on goal, while Haymaker finished with four shots on goal. 

McKenzie Scott led the Maroons in ground balls, picking up seven on the afternoon, while Haymaker and Katie Gehrdes tied with five apiece.  Scott and Gehrdes also led the team in forced turnovers, causing four each.  Alexa Germany, a senior who tallied her first career goal and assist in the 2014 season, got both a goal and an assist in the opening game of the 2015 season.  Scott (0-1) played all 60 minutes in goal for the Maroons, tallying eight saves over the course of the day.

Claire Feeney scored the opening goal for the Maroons with 28:11 to play in the first half, aided by an assist from Julia Galanto.  Five minutes later, Catie Chess scored CNU's first goal off of a free position shot, tying the game at 1-1.  Makenzie Haymaker scored her first goal of the season at the 20:12 mark, netting an unassisted shot to reclaim the lead for the Maroons. 

Over the course of the next four minutes, the captains scored five consecutive goals, three of which came from Kylie Chaplin.  Chess and Colleen Bourgal scored the other two goals, with Bourgal's tally coming on a player-up advantage.  Roanoke stopped the CNU run with a goal from Allison Beames at 15:49, assisted by Feeney.  After 14 minutes of scoreless play by either team, Courtney McCartin tallied a goal with 1:23 to play in the half, with an assist by Meredith Bigelow.  After the first half concluded, Roanoke trailed 6-4 to Christopher Newport.

CNU's Caitlin King and Collen Bourgal tallied the first two opening goals of the second half, building the Captains' lead to a 8-4 advantage.  Feeney broke up the CNU scoring with a goal at the 25:29 mark, assisted by Alexa Germany.  Christopher Newport went on another run, this time 4-0, with three more goals by Kylie Chaplin and a player-up goal for Colleen Borugal.

However, Roanoke answered with a 4-0 run of their own over the span of five minutes.  Nicole Zelnik got the scoring started for the Maroons with an unassisted goal at 14:32.  McCartin scored the next two goals for the Maroons, both of which came from free position shots and brought Roanoke back within four, 12-8.  At 9:40, Mackenzie Haymaker scored an unassisted goal to get the deficit to just three goals, 12-9.

With 6:33 to play, the Captains scored two goals over the next 30 seconds, one from Meaghan Galvin, the other from Kylie Chaplin.  Roanoke wasn't out just yet, as McCartin scored her fourth goal of the afternoon on a pass from Meredith Bigelow with 3:42 to play.  Alexa Germany scored the final goal of the game with 1:44 to play off of a free position shot.  But, the Maroons still trailed by three, 14-11 as the horn sounded, and Roanoke fell to non-conference opponent Christopher Newport.

The Captains were led in scoring by Kylie Chaplin, who scored half of the team's 14 goals on the day.  She finished with nine shots, eight on goal, with one ground ball and one assist.  Coleen Bourgal scored three goals while Catie Chess finished with two.  Kirsten Mendelsohn led the Captains with ground balls and forced turnovers, notching five in each category.  Hanna Slough (2-2) also played a complete game in net, finishing with eight saves on 19 shots faced.

Roanoke led in the ground ball category, having a 35-28 advantage over the Captains on Tuesday.  The two teams had identical marks in clears, going 16-17 on the day, while CNU led in draw controls, 16-11.
