Maroons Win NCAA First Round Contest With Bryn Athyn, 22-3

The Lead: The No. 16 Roanoke women's lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round with a 22-3 win over CSAC Champion Bryn Athyn in the First Round this afternoon.

How it Happened/Highlights:

  • The first half, in particular, the first quarter was all Maroons. Soria Ebert got things started just 1:02 into the game with an unassisted goal with Tiernan Connor and Sydney Harrison, as well as a second by Ebert, each scored in the first five minutes to put the Maroons ahead 4-0. Roanoke added five more goals over the next five minutes with Lilly Blair, Keely Dent, Nicole Harrison, Kate Loughran, and Tiernan Connor all finding the back of the cage as the lead grew to 9-0. Two more goals by Blair and a woman-up goal by Tracey Benzing saw the Maroons lead 12-0 at the end of the first quarter.
  • The second quarter saw Roanoke push its lead to 17-0 with five more goals by S. Harrison, Libby Bowman, Connor, Ali Carpentier, and Blair.
  • Scoring slowed down in the third quarter but both N. Harrison and S. Harrison scored as Roanoke led 19-0 before back-to-back Lion goals by Maria Storck and Shea Gormley got Bryn Athyn on the scoreboard.
  • Natalie Mason scored just her second goal of the season to start the fourth quarter with Loughran following behind with a goal that saw the lead back up to 21-2. A second goal by Gormely saw the Lions add one to the board before Addison Schmidt scored the game's final goal at 7:15 as the Maroons held on for the 22-3 win.
  • Blair led the offense for the Maroons with four goals and four assists. Both S. Harrison and Connor also scored three goals for Roanoke. In total, 12 different Maroons scored in the contest.
  • Kyleigh Chickering earned the win by playing just 18 minutes and making one save. Amber Stallings played the final 42 minutes and made four saves in goal.
