The Basics:

Score:  Freshman/Sophomore and Open Divisions (Individual only, no team score)
Event: 2021 Southeast Open (Cregger Center)
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: The Roanoke College wrestling team competed for the first time at the 201 Southeast Open. The Maroon wrestlers would compete in the Freshman/Sophomore division of the one-day, 12-mat event held in the Cregger Center and featuring wrestlers from DI, DII, and DIII institutions.

RC highlights:

  • 125: Mac Cafurello picked up a 5-2 decision in his first match (Virginia Tech) and earned a trip to the semifinals with a 2-1 win (UVa.). Cafurello fell in the semifinal round to Ed Ventresca (Va. Tech) 8-2.
  • 133: Sean Hall picked up his first win via a fall in 1:13 over his opponent from Ferrum. In the quarterfinals, Hall lost by 6-1 decision to Andrew Wart of Virginia Tech. In the other half of the draw, Corey Messick made short work of his first opponent (:46) but would fall in the quarters to Erik Roggie of UVa.
  • 141: Garrett Hughes rolled to a 12-5 decision over his opponent from Davidson before falling to Caden McCrary of UNC, 5-2.
  • 149: A trio of Maroons won their first match. Nicholas Young (2-1), Jarrod Pominville (6-3), and Gavin Lloyd (8-2) would pick up wins over opponents from Ferrum, Campbell, and VMI before be eliminated in the next round.
  • 157: David Reid won is match against a wrestler from VMI before falling to Tommy Askey, 6-1, of Appalachian State.

Up next:  On Wednesday the Maroons will host their first ever dual match when they welcome fellow Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) foe Washington and Lee to the Cregger Center for a 7:00pm start.
