Campbell Wins At 157 In Danville

The Lead: The Maroons traveled to Averett to compete in the Cougar Open on Saturday. The Maroons would accrue 121.5 points, fourth most in the field of 18. Individually, Roanoke would pick up one win to go with a runner-up, pair of thirds and a fourth-place finish.

RC highlights:

  • 141: Morgan Robinson would finish third. After receiving a bye in the first round, Robinson picked up a 7-0 decision (East Carolina). In the quarters he earned four points for his major decision over his opponent from Shenandoah. Hunter Campbell (Averett) knocked Morgan out in the semis with an 8-1 decision, but Robinson won the 3rd place match.
  • 149: Gavin Lloyd ran through the bracket to earn a runner-up finish. Three consecutive falls (1:22, 2:31, and 6:32) would propel Lloyd into the quarterfinals. Gavin earned a berth in the finals with a 7-5 decision over Averett's David Smith. In the finals, Lloyd was deep into the third period before he fell to Patrick Coffron (Shenandoah).
  • 157: Jack Campbell made it to the final match and picked up an individual win for the Maroons. In the first round Campbell posted a major decision (Ferrum) 14-0. After a 7-3 decision over his opponent from Averett, Campbell won in sudden victory, 4-2, over Connor McCann (Liberty). A pin of Levi Field (E&H) would put Campbell into the 1st place match. In the final, Jack won by 12-5 decision over Ferrum's Christian Hite.
  • 165: Andrew McDougal lost in the semifinals but rallied to win the 3rd place match. After a bye, McDougal won by decision, 4-3, over Elijah Martin of Ferrum. After the close win, Andrew picked up a 10-8, major decision to earn a spot in the semis. Anthony Taylor won a decision over McDougal, but in the 3rd place match, McDougal finished the afternoon with a 4-2 decision over Dustin Blackburn (Greensboro).
  • 174: Steven Martinos earned a 4th place finish. A bye in the first round proceeded an 11-0, major decision over his opponent from Ferrum. Martinos pinned Noah Harris (Averett) just 1:45 into the match. In the semifinals, Steven was knocked out of the winner's bracket by a technical fall. In the 3rd place match, Terrence Mills of Allen University won by a 10-5 decision.
