The Lead: The Roanoke College wrestling team competed in the Cregger Center for the final time in their inaugural season on Thursday night when they hosted Southern Virginia. The Maroons would not disappoint the home fans as they picked up a pair of falls, two technical falls and three decisions on their way to a 34-15 win over the Knights.  

Highlights:

  • 125: Mac Cafurello was up 12-1 in the second period when he took Jaden Nelson to the mat for a four count, ending the match with a technical fall with just 20 seconds left on the clock.
  • 133: Webb Drescher was in control throughout his match, picking up a 9-2 decision and adding a team point with over 2:00 of riding time.
  • 145: The quickest match of the night ended in a hurry when Morgan Robinson took Sawyer Ferry to the mat in the opening seconds and pinned him with 2:30 left on the clock for the fall and six points.
  • 157: Heath Rudolph extended the Roanoke lead when he picked up an 11-2 decision and an extra point for his 3:00 advantage in riding time.
  • 168: Andrew McDougal fell behind, 2-0, in the early stages before an escape and take-down put him in front. Leading 11-2, McDougal picked up four points in the final five seconds to pick up the major decision, 15-4.
  • 184: Mahlic Sallah picked up six back points and over 2:00 of riding time to build a 12-2 lead after the opening period. After a quick escape, Sallah took Ikia Garcia to the mat for four more back points as he earned the technical fall, 19-2, at the 1:34 mark of the second frame.
  • 197: Jackson Shumate took on Cache Holmes in what proved to be the most exciting match of the night. The match would be tied, 4-4, heading into the first extra period. As the clock ticked to under a minute, Shumate was able to gain control on the mat and pin Holmes at the :43 mark.

Up next: Roanoke travels to Danville on Saturday to compete in the Southeast Wrestling Conference (SEWC) Tournament hosted by Averett University.
