The Lead: Roanoke got the 2022-23 season off at home by hosting the 2022 Southeast Open at the Cregger Field House. The tournament featured both freshmen/sophomore and open divisions in all 10 weight classes.

RC highlights:

  • 133 (Freshman/Sophomore) – Mark Samuel ran through the title bout at 133 lbs. in the freshman/sophomore bracket. He started off with a Fall over Frank Depinet of Tiffin at 3:57 in his first collegiate match. He followed that up with a second fall over Drew Currier of Franklin & Marshall at 4:54. In the semifinals he won a major decision over Keyveon Roller of Virginia 19-8. He was only stopped by Garrett Grice of Virginia in the title match by major decision 16-5.
  • 174 (Freshman/Sophomore) – Kyle Lee started his collegiate career with a 3-1 decision in sudden victory over Patrick Adams of Campbell. He dropped his semifinal match against Brody Conly of West Virginia before bouncing back in the third-place match. He picked up his first career fall over Josh Epperly at 4:05.
  • 125 (freshman/sophomore) – Mac Cafurello dropped his first match at 125 lbs. before rebounding for three-straight wins to earn his second podium finish of his career. He started the run with over Luke Roberts of Bluefield State in a tech. fall 16-1 over at 3:48. He the won his next match against Luke Passarelli of Davidson by way of default at the 5:00 minute mark. He won the 5th Place match against Jace Schafer of West Virginia by decision 7-5.
  • 157 (freshman/sophomore) – Andrew McDougal reached his second career podium with a 6th place finish in the 157 lbs. bracket. After dropping a 9-4 decision to Nick Sanko of Virginia, he picked up a 5-2 decision over teammate Zane Cox. McDougal when won back-to-back matches against Nolan O'Boyle of Norfolk Academy by major decision 16-8 and a 10-9 decision over Drake Acklin of Appalachian State. A tough 5th place match saw Connor Kievman of Columbia win by decision 6-5 over McDougal.
