21 Maroons Reached the Podium at the 2022 Cougar Classic

The Lead: Roanoke saw 21 wrestlers reach the podium of their weight class, led by four titles at 125 lbs., 141 lbs., 165 lbs., and 197 lbs. No team scores were kept as it was an open-style tournament.  

RC highlights:

  • 125 lbs. – Josh Noble won the 125 bracket picking up two falls, a major decision, and a decision on his way to the title.
  • 133 lbs. – Sean Hall finished seventh after picking up four falls. Hall won over teammate Corey Messick in the 7th Place match, with Messick also reaching the podium.
  • 141 lbs. – This weight class saw several Maroons reach its podium. Morgan Robinson claimed the title with four falls, including one in the title match. Nick Kauffman finished third after earning a fall, tech. fall, and a major decision on the day. Three more Maroons finished sixth through eighth with Dustin Smith, Garrett Hughes, and Joe Jackson, respectively.
  • 149 lbs. – Jarrod Pominville finished fourth after reaching the semifinals with two falls and a major decision. Colin Neal and Nicholas Young faced off against each other in the 5th Place match with Neal winning by fall to finish fifth.
  • 157 lbs. – Zane Cox reached the title match but fell by decision to finish second. He collected one of every type of match result with a fall (1st round), tech. fall (2nd round), decision (quarterfinals), and major decision (semifinals). Ryan Foutz also reached the podium after finishing sixth with a fall and two tech. falls.
  • 165 lbs. – Both David Reid and Jacob Cherry reached the title match with Reid winning the title in a 3-2 decision. Reid had two major decisions, two decisions, and a fall while Cherry finished with two decisions, a tech. fall, and a major decision. Jack Campbell finished third after reaching the semifinals, where he lost a decision to Cherry. Jack Bobeck also reached the podium at 165 after placing sixth.
  • 174 lbs. – Two wrestlers placed in this weight class led by Kyle Lee reached the title match with two decisions and a major decision. Steven Martinos also placed at 174 lbs., finishing seventh with two falls and two decisions.
  • 197 lbs. – Cam Cavins was the lone Maroon at 197 but came away with the title after running through the competition with two falls, two decisions, and a major decision.
  • 285 lbs. – Joshua Mancia reached the semifinals before finishing third at heavyweight. He picked up a pair of falls, a major decision, and a decision en route to the podium.
