Four Maroons Win Titles As Roanoke Finishes Strong at the 2022 Star City Classic

The Lead: The Roanoke wrestling team had four weight class winners with 11 total making the podium (top 4) while also picking up a dual win over Huntingdon on Sunday at the 2022 Star City Classic, sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps.  

RC highlights:

  • 125 lbs. – Jude Robson swept through his four matches to win the 125 lbs. title. He picked up a fall, major decision, and tech. fall to win the bracket. Josh Noble dropped his first match but came through the wrestlebacks to finish third, including avenging his loss in the third-place match.
  • 133 lbs. – Sean Hall reached his second straight podium, this time after winning the title at 133 lbs. He won all three of his matches by fall.
  • 141 lbs. – Dustin Smith finished second and Nick Kauffman finished third at 141 lbs. Smith dropped a 3-2 in the final while Kauffman fell in the semifinals but bounced back to take third in an 8-5 decision.
  • 149 lbs. – Andru Boyd won two of his three matches in sudden victory by identical 3-1 scores, including the final, to win the 149 lbs. title.
  • 157 lbs. – William Kennedy was the fourth Maroon to win a title on Sunday after going 4-0 on the day. Ryan Foutz dropped a decision to Kennedy in the semifinals before winning his final two matches to take third place.
  • 165 lbs. – Jack Campbell and Jacob Cherry finished second and third, respectively at 165 lbs. Campbell lost a close decision in the finals, 7-5 while Cherry won a tight decision in the third-place match 5-3.
  • 174 lbs. – After winning his first match, Steven Martinos dropped his quarterfinal, before rebounding for three-straight wins to finish fourth at 174 lbs.
  • The Maroons also had two dual matches, starting off with Huntingdon. Roanoke won at each weight class except at 285 lbs./Hwt. The Maroons earned three falls and accepted two forfeits for the maximum 30 points from those matches alone. They also earned five points at 133 when Mark Samuel won by tech. fall in the second period.

  • In the second dual, the Maroons dropped a 27-13 match to Div. II Mount Olive. Sallah won by fall and Cafurello won a maj. decision to score extra points with Samuel winning a decision.
