The Lead: The Roanoke wrestling team split its two matches on Day 1 of the 2023 Virginia Duals. The Maroons opened up with a 33-19 win over CCC before falling to Alvernia, 24-12.

RC highlights:

  • The Maroons started the day taking on Camden County. Jude Robson and Sean Hall opened up the match at 125 and 133 lbs., respectively, each tallying falls. After CCC cut the lead in half with a pair of decisions, the Maroons responded by winning four of the next five bouts, three by fall at 157, 164, and 184. CCC won by fall at heavyweight to bring the final score 33-18 in favor of Roanoke.

  • In the second dual, the Maroons dropped a 24-12 match to Alvernia. Mac Cafurello won at 125 lbs. in sudden victory with a takedown with 44 seconds left in the first overtime period. Hall followed with his second pin of the day with just 23 seconds left in the match. The Golden Wolves responded by winning the next five bouts to take a 17-9 lead. Sallah tried to get the Maroons back on track with a 10-4 decision win, but Alvernia won the final two matches for the win.
