Salem, VA --- Roanoke College defeated Eastern Mennonite 3-0 in the ODAC Quarterfinals at Kerr Stadium on Saturday. The victory advanced the Maroons to the ODAC Semifinals Wednesday and improved their record to 11-6-2. The Maroons now own a 7-3-1 series advantage against the EMU. The loss ended the Royals season with an overall record of 9-8.
Tami Alcalde opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a hard shot from the left side for her third goal of the season, 25th of her career.
Early in the second half, Jessica Welfare crossed the ball to connect with senior Kristen McCoy for her 11th goal of the year. Welfare later scored in the second half from Meredith Grunewald's corner kick, her team leading 13th assist of the season, which tied her for sixth all-time in the ODAC.
Grunewald is one point away from breaking the single-season scoring mark with 45 points and is three assists shy of tying the first place record for assists in a season held by Denise Abe with 16.
Roanoke's defense proved effective once again, notching their fifth shutout in the last six games. The Maroons have allowed only three goals in the last eight games to tally a 6-1-1 record.
Goalkeeper Lindsay Kooiman had two saves in the contest to give her 64 on the year and her seventh career shutout.
The Maroons outshot the Royals 13-4 with a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. Abigale Diffenbach had four saves in the loss for the Royals.
The women will travel to Virginia Beach on Wednesday, Nov. 5 for the semifinal round of the ODAC tournament versus #1 seed Virginia Wesleyan. Roanoke will look to avenge their 0-3 loss on Oct. 4 earlier this season. The Maroons are 11-11-2 all-time against the Marlins.
