Lynchburg tops Roanoke, 4-1 in Women's Soccer
LYNCHBURG, Va. --- Roanoke dropped a 4-1 ODAC match against Lynchburg College on Wednesday evening. The Maroons dropped to 7-5 overall, 3-3 in the ODAC. The Hornets improved to 7-2-2, 4-1 in conference play.
Lynchburg, who is now 17-15-1 against Roanoke all-time, out-shot its opponent, 22-14, including 10-7 in shots on goal. They also held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. The Hornets are 3-0-1 in the last four meetings against the Maroons.
In a physical contest with 29 fouls called, the Hornets took the lead early within the first 10 minutes of play. Shelley Hoath scored off an assist from Betsy Kwiatkowski to make it, 1-0 in the 11th minute. They held on to the slim lead heading into the second half. Jessica Welfare (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley)had a breakaway scoring opportunity within the first minute of play, but the shot fell into the goalkeepers hands.
Lynchburg extended its lead as Kristen Melchiori scored within the first four minutes after intermission from Ashley Hoath. Melchiori scored her second goal off a corner kick in the 65th minute from Brittany Klippstein and Cecilia Moore to make it, 3-0.
Welfare cut the lead to 3-1 with her second goal of the season off a penalty kick four minutes later. The goal gave the Maroons some fire as they pressured the Hornet defense with several shots on goal over the ensuing 10 minutes of play. Klippstein added an insurance goal for the Hornets from Ashley Hoath with 14 minutes left to keep the Maroons at bay the remainder of the contest.
Welfare led the Maroons with a goal and four shots, two on goal. Ashley Manning (Katonah, NY, Somers)also had two shots on goal while McKenzie Garst (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)added two shots, one on goal. Lindsay Kooiman (Fredricksburg, VA, Mountain View)finished with six saves. Anna Wright also totaled six saves for the Hornets.
The women return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 14 as they travel to Tennessee to take on Maryville (TN) in non-conference action. The Maroons are 7-1 all-time against the Scots and will meet for the first time since 2005. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
