Women's Soccer Receives Votes in NSCAA Div. III Week One National Poll
The Roanoke College Women's Soccer team received votes in the NSCAA Div. III Week One National Poll announced Monday afternoon. The Maroons (2-0) are also third in the South Atlantic Regional Rankings behind #4 Emory and #25 College of New Jersey.
The Maroons claimed the Shellenberger Classic last weekend, defeating opponents Birmingham-Southern (2-1) and Sewanee (2-0). Birmingham-Southern upset then-ranked #18 Lynchburg, 2-1 on Sunday to receive votes the national rankings. Freshman Sarah Valero led Roanoke by scoring a goal in both contests.
Notable teams below Roanoke in the NSCAA South Atlantic Region rankings are Virginia Wesleyan (4th), Lynchburg (5th), Salisbury (7th) and Washington and Lee (9th). This is the highest national ranking for the women's soccer program since 2007, when they advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
The women will host the 2011 Roanoke College Invitational this weekend, Sept. 10-11. The Maroons will open up with #4 Emory (1-0) Saturday at 1:30 p.m. They will turn around on Sunday and host Salisbury (2-0-1) at 4 p.m.
