The Basics
Score: Roanoke 1 | Washington and Lee 1

Records: Maroons 6-1-1 / 0-0-1 ODAC | Generals 5-1-1 / 0-0-1 ODAC
Location: Lexington, Va.

The Lead: With the non-conference matchup with Lynchburg on Wednesday canceled for weather, the Roanoke women's soccer team traveled to Lexington to open Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons and Generals played the first 45 minutes to a scoreless draw. With less than 15 minutes left to play, the Generals netted the go ahead score. However, with just seconds left on the clock, Roanoke got the equalizer and the match headed to overtime. After 20 extra minutes, neither team could break the tie and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Highlights:

  • With 14:36 left on the clock in the second half, W&L sent a shot into the Roanoke goal for a 1-0 advantage.
  • The Maroons would have one final chance. Just seven seconds remained when Emma Woods set up Makayla Metzler  off a corner kick for the game tying score and the match would head to overtime.
  • In the two extra periods, Washington and Lee out-shot RC 4-0 but only one of the shots was on goal. As the final horn sounded, Roanoke had used that late score to come away with a 1-1 draw.
  • The Generals would enjoy a 21-6 advantage in shots taken but the Roanoke defense only allowed 11 of the shots to be on the Maroons goal. Carrington Lippi played all 110 minutes on her way to a nine save afternoon.

Up next: Roanoke College will return home and play host to Randolph College on Wednesday afternoon. The match with the Wildcats is scheduled to start at 4:30pm.
