The Lead: Saturday was the Roanoke College Vs. Cancer match, used to bring awareness and funding for pediatric brain cancer, the deadliest disease affecting children in the United States. The Maroons faced off with Virginia Wesleyan in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action. The Marlins got a goal midway through the first half to take a 1-0 lead into the break. A late Marlin score would make it 2-0 as the visitors picked up the ODAC win.

Highlights:

  • Roanoke got a good scoring chance early, but a Morgan O'Neill shot was just wide of the left post.
  • About midway through the first half, the Marlins picked up a loose ball and sent a shot that rebounded off the crossbar and into the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage.
  • Three first-half saves by Carrington Lippi would keep the Maroons within a goal as they trailed, 1-0, at the break.
  • At the 67-minute mark, Mia Clary was set up for a potential game-tying shot but the ball sailed just over the crossbar.
  • With less than 30 seconds to play, the Marlins sent a long pass over the top of the defense and the attacker won the one-on-one battle with the keeper for a 2-0 final score.
  • Lippi finished with five saves.

Up next: The Maroons are scheduled to make the short trip to Roanoke to face Hollins on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00pm.
