Maroon Men Win, Women Runner Up At Guilford

The Lead: The Roanoke College swim teams were back in the pool for the first time in two weeks as they traveled to North Caroline for the Guilford College Invite. The RC men won the event, finishing atop the six-team field while the women finished runner-up to UNC Pembroke, in the field of eight women's teams.

Women's highlights:

  • UNC Pembroke won with a total of 582 points with Roanoke finishing with 447 and Lenoir Rhyne, 3rd, with 343.
  • Roanoke picked up a runner up finish to start the afternoon. The team of Lily Mullens, Hannah Zhang, Hannah Petty, and Elizabeth Roberts touched just 1.55 seconds behind the winning team from Pembroke.
  • Mullens won the 100 Backstroke as the only swimmer to best the one-minute mark, 59.18. The freshman added third place minutes in the 50 Freestyle, just .93 of a second off the winning time.
  • The other relay event would se the quartet of Mullens, Roberts, Zhang, and Lore Gibson earned a second-place finish in the 200 Medley Relay with a final time of 1:52.44.
  • Maria Vinson gave RC another runner-up finish with a time of 2:12.31 in the 200 Individual Medley (IM).
  • In the 200 Freestyle, Susanna Price just missed second place points by .01 of a second (1:56.64).  

Men's highlights:

  • Roanoke finished the afternoon with 864 points to take the men's title with Lenoir Rhyne the runner-up, 396, and Lynchburg picking up third, 300.
  • The first event of the afternoon, the 200 Freestyle Relay, Roanoke picked up their first of six wins. 1:26.05 for the quartet of Erik Kratzer, Logan Deal, Richie Evans, and Xavier Williams.
  • Ben Tate would notch two more individual wins with 51.59 in the 100 Fly and 1:43.91 in the 200 Freestyle.
  • The 100 Backstroke would see Kratzer adding an individual win (52.14) while Evans finished 3rd.
  • Deal had a pair of second-place efforts. 57.39 seconds in the 100 Breaststroke would be just .92 of a second behind the leader. In the 200 IM Deal touched second as Chris Snow and Davis Wheeler rounded out the 2-3-4 finish for the Maroons.
  • Evans added first place points in the 100 Freestyle with a final time of 47.02.
  • Williams just missed a win, .12 of a second, with a time of 21.53 in the 50 Freestyle.
  • Kratzer, Tate, Williams, and Connor Kinkema made it a sweep of the relays with a time of 1:34.06 in the 200 Medley Relay.

Up next:  Next Saturday, Roanoke travels to Liberty University to compete in a tri-meet with Lynchburg and Miligan.
