Roanoke Upsets Washington & Lee, 3-2 in ODAC Quarterfinals
ROANOKE, Va. --- Roanoke climbed back from a 2-0 deficit to knock off #2 seed Washington & Lee, 3-2 in the ODAC Quarterfinals Friday evening. With the win, the Maroons improved to 14-16 on the year and will advance to the ODAC Semifinals. The Generals end their season at 19-14.
Roanoke, which defeated Washington & Lee for the first time since the 2000 season, knocked off the eight-time defending ODAC Champions. The Generals have won the ODAC Tournament in 11 of the last 12 seasons and have been in the ODAC Championship every year since 1995 until tonight.
After dropping the first two sets, 25-18 and 25-15, the Maroons took game three, 25-20 and came-from-behind to win the fourth set, 27-25 to force the fifth set. The Generals held a 14-13 lead in the fifth set and were serving for the match, but Roanoke battled to tie the score at 14-14 and eventually took the upper hand as Maggie Wagner (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)scored the final point of the set to take the match.
Wagner finished with 19 kills and 17 digs, followed by Kelsey Largen (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)with 20 kills and 16 digs. Caitlyn Long (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)totaled 45 assists and 28 digs as she was selected Second-Team All-ODAC following the match. Emily Martin (Daleville, VA, Lord Botetourt)added 25 digs as did Lindsay Wright (Vail, CO, Vail )with 11 digs in the historic win.
The women will await the winner of the #3 Lynchburg/#6 Virginia Wesleyan match for tomorrow, Nov. 7 with the match scheduled for 11 a.m. The winner of the semifinals will advance to the ODAC Championship, which will start at 2 p.m.
