Roanoke Claims Two Wins on Senior Day
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke won both of their final home matches on senior day at the Bast Center Saturday afternoon. The Maroons, who defeated both Mary Baldwin and Averett in non-conference action, improved to 20-5 on the season.
With the wins today, it marks the third 20-win season over the last four years. It's the fifth 20-win season in program-history, which all came during Blair Trail's tenure as head coach (2002-03, 2007-08, 10). It also marked the final home matches for Emily Martin (Daleville, VA, Lord Botetourt) and Maggie Wagner (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring), who have been a part of three of the five 20-win seasons.
Roanoke cruised to a three-set victory over Mary Baldwin with scores of 25-14, 25-25 and 25-9. Wagnerfinished with 10 kills and six digs in the first match of the day. Nicci Moats (Blue Ridge, VA, Lord Botetourt) added five kills and Rachel Hawkins (Winchester, VA, Millbrook) chipped in three along with three blocks (one solo). Bren Wilberger (Richmond, VA, Steward ) and Shannon Stone (Williamsburg, VA, Lafayette) combined for 25 assists, while Kelsey Largen (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring) led Roanoke with four aces and nine digs. Martinalso led the Maroons with nine digs.
In the second match of the afternoon, Roanoke defeated Averett in straight sets, 25-21, 25-21 and 25-19. Wagner led Roanoke once again with 12 kills, 13 digs and three aces. Largen added nine kills, 10 digs and two aces while Kylie Lucas (Verona, VA, Fort Defiance) finished with six kills, four digs and five blocks (four solo). Rachel Hawkins chipped in six kills. The duo of Wilberger and Stone combined for 37 assists.
Wagner passed Jenna Burnop (Blacksburg, VA, Blacksburg) '08 for fifth all-time in career kills (901) and Holly Holland (Roanoke, VA, William Byrd) '04 fourth in career digs (947). Stone passed Abby Leake (Woodstock, VA) '00 for ninth on the career assists list (696).
The women return to action on Friday, Oct. 22 as the Maroons take on Eastern Mennonite in ODAC play. Roanoke has won the last eight meetings against the Royals. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
