The Lead: Roanoke College played host to the 2021 Maroon Classic on Friday. The Maroons would face Mary Baldwin in their opener. The first set was tied late, but three straight Roanoke points would give the Maroons the set and all the momentum. Roanoke would never look back, taking the next two sets on their way to a 3-0 victory.

Highlights:

  • The opening set would be tied at 22-22 in the final stages. Linsey Bailey recorded a kill to give the Maroons the lead. Bailey then would serve out the set with back-to-back service aces to give Roanoke a 1-0 edge.
  • Roanoke used a 7-2 run in the opening part of the second set to build an early lead. A Logan Pasley service ace would push the advantage to double digits, 16-6 as the Maroons would cruise to a 25-13 second set win.
  • Two kills by Bailey and one by Olivia Newman would allow Roanoke to carry the momentum into the third stanza. Kennedy Clemmer made it 4-0 with an ace and Roanoke never looked back in taking the set, 25-16, and the match 3-0.
  • Bailey finished with 12 kills while Parker Moody and Peyton Kirchner added six apiece. Newman led with 18 assists and Bailey recorded a team high 10 digs while the duo combined for eight of the Maroon's 16 service aces.

Score: Roanoke 3 | Methodist 1 (24-26, 25-20, 25-11, 25-15)

Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: Roanoke took on Methodist just minutes after defeating Mary Baldwin in their 2021 Maroon Classic opener. The Monarchs would win a tight first set, 26-24, to take an early advantage over the Maroons. However, Roanoke would tie it up and use 65 kills to sweep the final three sets of the match and give the Maroons a 2-0 start to the Classic.

Highlights:

  • With the first set tied at 24-24, Methodist would use a kill and an attack error to take the opener, 26-24.
  • Second set would see Roanoke use two Kirchner kills and another by Kayleigh Eason to spark a 5-0 run mid-way through the frame to take control and even the match at a set apiece.
  • Three Bailey kills allowed the Maroons take a 6-0 lead in a third set. 19-3 would be the Maroon's edge at the net, with Roanoke needing just one more set to take the match.
  • Roanoke left no doubt, once again dominating at the net, 15-6 in kills, on their way to a 3-1, come from behind victory.
  • 23 kills from Bailey and another 11 from Moody would lead a Roanoke attack of 65 total kills. Newman handed out 35 assists while Kylee Draper handed out 22 helpers of her own. Clemmer led the team with 20 digs as a quartet of Maroons reached double digits.
