The Lead: For the fourth consecutive game, the Roanoke College volleyball team was on the road against Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) competition when they made the long trip east to face Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday night. After falling down 2-0, the Maroons rallied to take the third set but the rally would fall short as the Marlins took the fourth, 25-23, and the match, 3-1.

Highlights:

  • Virginia Wesleyan used an 8-2 run to break open a close opening set to take a 1-0 lead.
  • An early 4-0 run would give the Marlins a quick advantage in the second set. Roanoke would hang around and after back-to-back VWU miscues, trailed 12-17. An 8-4 closing surge allowed the home team to take the second frame and a 2-0 lead.
  • The third set was tied, 21-21, late. A Kayleigh Eason block and consecutive Peyton Kirchner kills, allowed Roanoke to close the gap, 2-1.
  • Roanoke would trail, 21-24, taking a timeout late in the fourth set. The Maroons got a Virginia Wesleyan attack error out of the break and after another point, had cut the deficit to a single point. However, a final Marlin kill would wrap up the 3-1 win for the home team.
  • Kirchner led the attack with 12 kills with Ryanna Clark adding 10 and Parker Moody finishing with nine kills.
  • Olivia Newman had 21 assists and Kylee Draper added 12. Kirchner recorded three solo blocks and Kennedy Clemmer had 21 digs

Up next: The Maroons will finally return to the Cregger Center next Wednesday when they play host to Bridgewater at 7:00pm.
