Mayer's 17 Kills Leads Maroons Past Randolph, 3-1

The Short Story: After dropping the first set, the Roanoke College women's volleyball team came back to win the next three sets to claim the 3-1 ODAC win over the Randolph College WildCats on Saturday afternoon in Lynchburg.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Despite having early and mid-set leads, the Maroons saw the WildCats use a late six-point run to take a 19-14 lead and hold on to it for the 25-19 set one win.
  • Roanoke only trailed for four points in the second set and used a nine-point run midway through the set to take a commanding 16-8 lead over Randolph. The Maroons led by as many as 11 twice in the set at 21-10 and 23-12 before Roanoke took the final two points to even the match at 1-1 with a 25-16 set two win.
  • The third set was much more back and forth early on as Roanoke had a 7-6 before going on a five-point run and a four-point run to take another 16-8 lead in a set. Much like the second set, the Maroons continued to push ahead and took a 2-1 set lead with a 25-18 set two win.
  • Roanoke never trailed in the fourth and final set leading by as many as eight points at 22-14 before closing out the match with a kill by Claire Williams, 25-19.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Three Maroons had double-digit kills, led by Rylee Mayer's game-high 17. Georgie Ritter and Peyton Kirchner had 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
  • Kylee Draper recorded another double-double with 45 assists and 11 digs.
  • Kennedy Clemmer finished the contest with a match-high 22 digs.
  • As a team, the Maroons finished the second with a .357 attack percentage on 14 kills while hitting .333 in the fourth set, also on 14 kills.

  • Roanoke steps out of ODAC play on Monday, October 17 when they travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to take on Salem College. Game time with the Spirits is scheduled for 6 p.m. The Maroons already have a win over Salem this season with a 3-2 victory in their opening match of the 2022 Maroon Classic.
