Roanoke College Athletics Diversity and Inclusion Statement 2022

At Roanoke College, we recognize that whole person development can only succeed in a community where students, faculty, staff and alumni see that each of us matters, each of us belongs and each of us has a purpose to find and to live.  To that end, in consultation with our colleagues on campus, Athletic Department Staff and Student-Athletes seek to create an educational environment that is socially aware, culturally inclusive and globally mindful.  We celebrate our diversity.  We strive for equity.  We are steadfast in our quest to keep our campus free from discrimination.

Roanoke College Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

As a student-athlete or coach at Roanoke College, I pledge to

Embrace Diversity

Diversity includes everything that we are and that we are not; it is all-encompassing. It is the range of human differences, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, linguistic differences, cultural backgrounds, age, socio-economic status, physical ability or attributes, religious or ethical values system, national origin, diverse opinions, academic passions and political beliefs.

Pursue Inclusive Excellence

Inclusion is when everyone feels valued and respected, despite differences. Inclusion is involvement and empowerment, where the inherent worth and dignity of all people are recognized. Inclusion is the act of capitalizing on distinctive, unique campus cultures while encouraging strong institutional unity.  Inclusive Excellence is an ongoing, collaborative process uniting students, faculty, staff, administrators and alumni in the work of embedding diversity and inclusiveness throughout College life.

Denounce Bias

Bias is defined as prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair.

Roanoke College values diversity in its community.  Any form of discrimination, lack of respect, or act of intolerance against any person or organization based on race, religion, ethnic background, gender, gender orientation, or disability is in contradiction with college principles and unacceptable.

Roanoke College does not discriminate against students, employees, or applicants on the basis of race, color, gender, creed, religion, age, sexual orientation, marital status, national or ethnic origin, disability, or veteran status. (Source: Roanoke College Discrimination Policy)
