Baseball Drops Pair of ODAC Games to Hampden-Sydney on Saturday
SALEM, VA – The Roanoke College baseball team dropped a pair of games to Hampden-Sydney in ODAC action on Saturday afternoon.  The Maroons now have a record of 5-9; 1-3 in ODAC play, while the Tigers are 9-7-1; 2-0 in the ODAC.
 
In the first game of the day, Hampden-Sydney jumped out to the early lead.  As the leadoff batter, Christian Hamlett doubled to left center field.  John Lloyd hit an RBI single, scoring Hamlett, giving the Tigers the 1-0 lead.  The Maroons responded in the bottom of the frame as Brian Kluge led off with a single to left field.  Bradley Mattox also singled to the outfield as the next batter.  Mark Manthe hit an infield groundout, also scoring Kluge on the play.  Jacob Clifton had an identical play that scored Mattox, giving Roanoke a 2-1 lead.
 
Both teams went scoreless for the next three innings until the Tigers had a high-scoring fifth inning. After already scoring two runs in the inning, Beau Flinchum hit a grand slam give Hampden-Sydney a 7-2 lead through the top of the fifth.  Roanoke tried to answer, but scored two runs off hits from Boonewell Hagy and Cam Cassady, pulling within three, 7-4.  In the top of the next inning Hampden-Sydney scored one more run to take a four run, 8-4 lead.  In the bottom of the ninth, the Maroons tried to close the gap as Manthe hit an RBI double that scored Mattox.  However, that would be the only run Roanoke scored in the frame and the Maroons fell 8-5 in game number one.
 
Bradley Mattox led the team in hitting, going 3-5 on the afternoon, and scoring three of the team's five runs.  Brian Kluge, Boonewell Hagy, and Clark Crutchfield each finished with two hits.  Mark Manthe tallied a team high three RBIs.  Cameron Holshouser (2-2) was tabbed with the loss as he pitch 4.2 innings, giving up seven runs and striking out three.
 
Four different Hampden-Sydney players finished with two hits, while Christian Hamlett tallied three runs.  Beau Flinchum finished with four RBIs, stemming from his grand slam in the fifth inning.  Zach Whitaker (3-0) earned the win, pitching 4.2 innings, giving up four runs off 10 hits, and striking out two.  Aaron Stidham picked up his first save of the season, pitching 4.1 innings, and only giving up one run. 
 
The bats were even hotter for Hampden Sydney in the second game, as they posted 13 runs in the first four innings.  Roanoke scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Cody Craft hit an RBI single, plating Mark Manthe.  This run cut into the 13 run deficit and made the score 13-1 after four innings.
 
The Tigers scored two more runs in each of the next two innings, taking a 17-1 lead through the top of the sixth inning.  The Maroons hopped back on the board again in the bottom of the eighth.  Manthe opened up the inning with a single, followed by Jacob Clifton reaching on a fielder's choice.  Hagy singled after that and Craft reached on an error to load the bases.  Cam Cassady reached on a fielder's choice as well, scoring two runs in the process.  Clark Crutchfield hit an RBI single that plated Craft, while Aaron Burton hit an RBI sacrifice fly ball plating Cassady.  After the bottom of the eighth, Roanoke trailed 18-5.  Neither team scored in the ninth inning, as the Tigers took the second game by the score of 18-5.
 
Brian Kluge, Boonewell Hagy, Cody Craft and Cam Cassady each had two hits for the Maroons in the second game.  Five different players crossed the plate to score Roanoke's five runs as well.  Cassady finished with a team-high two RBIs.  Tyler Grouten (1-3) was tabbed with the loss, pitching 1.1 innings, and giving up seven runs off five hits.
 
Jeff Gray and John Lloyd led Hampden-Sydney with three hits each.  Christian Hamlett and Lloyd had a team-high three runs each for the Tigers as well.  James Keller led all players in RBIs with five, after hitting a three run home run during the contest.  Teddy West earned the victory for Hampden-Sydney, pitching six innings and only giving up one run off five hits.
 
The Maroons return to action on Tuesday, March 12th as they play host to Averett University at Kiwanis Field.  That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM first pitch.
