Maroons Rally in Ninth To Defeat Quakers, 5-4 on Sunday
SALEM – The Roanoke College baseball team posted three runs in the ninth inning to defeat Earlham College, 6-5 on Sunday afternoon.  The Maroons finish the three game series with a record of 8-11, while the Quakers now sit with a mark of 4-9.
 
Earlham jumped on the board first, as Alex Arovits hit an RBI double to left field, plating Sam Ward.  The Maroons were quick to respond as Jacob Clifton hit a two RBI single to center field, scoring Bradley Mattox and Brian Kluge to give Roanoke a 2-1 lead after the first inning.
 
Earlham went back on the offensive in the top of the fourth inning, as Josh Parr hit an RBI double, scoring Mark Dye, and tying the game up at 2-2.  Roanoke regained the lead in the very next half inning as Boonewell Hagy hit an outfield single, plating Mattox.
 
The Quakers' Arovits had another RBI hit in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 3-3.  Earlham scored two more runs in the top of the eighth inning to lead 5-3, with just an inning and a half to play.  In the bottom of the ninth inning, with two outs, Mark Manthe started the Roanoke rally, hiting an RBI single that scored Kluge, setting the deficit at one, 5-4.  After a pitching change for Earlham, Clark Crutchfield hit a two RBI double to left field, plating Danny Creel and Gavin Pellitteri, giving Roanoke the 6-5 victory.
 
Bradley Mattox, Mark Manthe, and Jacob Clifton each finished the game with a team-high two hits.  Clifton and Clark Crutchfield also led the team in RBIs with two each.  Austin Gregory was tabbed with the victory, after coming in the ninth inning and pitching one solid inning.
 
Earlham's Sam Ward led the team with three hits, going 3-5 on the afternoon.   He also scored a team high two runs.  He was followed in hitting by Alex Arovits and Josh Parr.  T.J. Plummer earned the loss after coming in during the ninth inning.
 
The Maroons return to action on Tuesday, March 19th as they travel to face Emory & Henry in ODAC action.  That contest is scheduled for a 3:00 PM start.
