Baseball Falls To Ferrum, 8-6 in Non-Conference Contest
SALEM - The Roanoke College Baseball team fell in non-conference action to Ferrum College on Wednesday evening, 8-6. The Maroons now have a record of 3-6, while the Panthers are now 12-8 on the season.

The Panthers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Ty Comer started the scoring by hitting a sacrifice fly ball to center field, plating Adam Duncan. With the bases loaded, Hank Parsley scored on a walk to make the score 2-0. The next batter, Nick Koutsoukos hit a single through the right side to plate Matt Ward, as the Panthers ended the first inning with a 3-0 advantage.

Roanoke scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. Devin Cassity reached first on a bunt, then promptly stole second base. After Will Black reached on an error, advancing Cassity to third, Gavin Pellitteri hit a single to right field to score Cassity. The Maroons scored another run in the bottom of the fourth. Cal Hodgert hit a double to right center field to lead off the inning. With the bases loaded, Cassity hit a sacrifice fly ball to bring home Hodgert, cutting the deficit to one, 3-2 after four.

The Panthers put up three more runs in the top of the sixth inning. A pair of back-to-back doubles scored the first two runs for Ferrum, while Ty Comer hit a sacrifice fly ball to plate Adam Duncan, giving Ferrum a 6-2 advantage. The Panthers scored one more run in the top of the seventh, as Lane Deaver crossed the plate on an infield ground out, putting the Panthers ahead by five, 7-2.

Roanoke responded in the bottom of the seventh inning. Will Decker reached first on an infield error. Crutchfield came up as the next batter with a double over the centerfielder's head, putting Decker on third. Hodgert hit a single to right field, which then the right fielder made an error on picking up, allowing both Crutchfield and Decker to score. After seven innings, Roanoke trailed by three, 7-4.

The Maroons rallied again in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Will Black hit a double to left center field. Pellitteri reached on a walk, putting runners on first and second. Will Decker followed with a double of his own, bringing home Black and putting Pellitteri on third. Crutchfield hit into an infield out to shortstop, but it allowed Pellitteri to score, as Roanoke now trailed 7-6 after eight innings.

With two outs, Trey Hamlett reached after getting hit by a pitch in the top of the ninth. A throwing error and a double from Ty Comer later, Ferrum now sat with a two run lead over the Maroons 8-6 with a half inning to play. Cal Hodgert led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to right field, but the next three batters were unable to bring him home, as Roanoke fell 8-6 on Wednesday.

The Maroons were led in hitting on Wednesday by Clark Crutchfield and Cal Hodgert, each tallying three hits on the night. Six different Maroons crossed the plate for Roanoke, while Hodgert put up two RBIs in the effort. Devin Cassity had Roanoke's only stolen base in the contest. Michael Mares was tabbed with the loss after giving up three runs off four hits in three innings of play.

The Panthers finished the game with 11 hits, led by Clay Massie with three. Adam Duncan and Matt Reynolds had two hits each. Duncan and Ty Comer led the Panthers with two RBIs apiece as well. Ian Gordon picked up the win with one inning of work, giving up one run off one hit. Jared Talley had his second save of the season finishing off the final inning in just four batters.

The Maroons return to action on Thursday, March 18th as they play host to Southern Virginia University at Lewis-Gale Field. That game is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start.
