The Lead: Jack Howard had four hits, while Eli Sumpter added three as the Maroons topped Eastern Mennonite 8-4 in the opening game of the doubleheader.

How it Happened

  • After EMU scored a pair of runs in its first at-bat, RC got on the board in the home-half of the first when Sean Guida led off with a solo home run to make it 2-1.
  • The Royals took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third inning as they took advantage of an RC error with two outs.
  • With two outs in the RC third inning, Guida doubled, went to third on a balk and scored on a hit by Sumpter that made the score 3-2.
  • Roanoke scored three runs in the fourth inning when Howard doubled to open the inning and scored on a Sam Watson single. Watson would score on an Ellis single and Guida would plate Ellis later in the inning with an RBI groundout that would give RC a 5-3 advantage.
  • Howard singled to open up the seventh inning and would move to third on a Watson single. Howard came home on a groundout by Ellis to make it 6-3.
  • A Howard single in the eighth inning scored Sumpter and made it an 8-3 game.
  • Matthew Franklin got the start for the Maroons and went 6.1 innings. Franklin allowed three runs on five hits and struck out six to improve his record to 1-0.
  • Damon Frazier (1-4) took the loss for EMU after going six innings and giving up five runs on 11 hits.

Records: Roanoke 13-3 / 5-0 ODAC | Eastern Mennonite 9-10 / 0-4 ODAC
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: Roanoke got seven strong innings from starting pitcher Ben West as the Maroons swept the ODAC doubleheader with a 6-0 win over EMU.

How it Happened

  • West allowed just three hits in his seven innings of work and struck out seven to improve his record to 3-1 on the year. Kevin Ledford came in and pitch the last two innings to pick up the save.
  • In the Roanoke second inning, Will Salva singled to open the inning and would score when Robbie Edwards tripled. Edwards would make the score 2-0 when he came home on a Dean Hermanson single with one out.
  • Salva would walk with one out in the sixth inning and scored on an Edwards double to push the RC lead to 3-0.
  • RC put the game away in the eighth inning when it scored three times. After the first two batters were retired, Hermanson and Will Smith singled. Guida tripled to bring home both runners and would score himself on a Sumpter single that made it 6-0.
  • Bailey Hall took the loss for EMU after starting and giving up three runs in six innings of work.
  • Guida finished with four hits in the game, while Sumpter got three hits of his own.
