RC Senior Class Earns 100th Win in Split with W&L

The Lead: Three Roanoke pitchers combined to allow just three hits as the Maroons topped Washington and Lee 6-1 and in the process gave RC's senior class its 100th career win, a first in program history.

How it Happened:

  • Roanoke got three runs in the first inning on an RBI single from Will Salva and a two-out RBI single by Robbie Edwards that plated Sam Watson and Salva.
  • With the score 3-1 in the RC seventh inning, the Maroons were able to draw six walks in the inning and got an RBI groundout from Salva to go up 4-1 and a two-out RBI from Watson that scored Jack Howard and Sean Guida to make it a 6-1 game.
  • Forrest Wagner did not allow a hit for the first 4.1 innings before giving way to Nick Raulin who tossed 2.2 innings of relief without giving up a hit and striking out two. Sal Trancucci came in for the final two innings and gave up just two hits.
  • Sumpter, Watson and Edwards all finished with two RBI in the win.
  • W&L's Peyton McCann took the loss after giving up the three first-inning runs, dropping his record to 2-4 on the season.

The Lead: Washington and Lee pushed across six runs in the final two innings to rally for an 8-5 win in game one.

How it Happened:

  • In the first inning, W&L used an RBI single from Chadwick Feeley and took advantage of a two-out error by RC to take an early 2-0 lead.
  • RC tied the game in the fifth inning on a two-out RBI single by Jack Howard which scored Salva and Cody Shell to knot the game at 2-2. In the Roanoke sixth inning, Watson singled to open the frame followed by a Gavin Kandrick walk. The duo would advance to second and third on an Eli Sumpter sacrifice bunt. Watson scored on a wild pitch that also moved Kandrick to third. Will Merriken then singled to give RC a 4-2 lead.
  • Washington and Lee loaded the bases with one out in the eighth inning and scored on an RBI groundout by Austin Crane. The Generals then went ahead 5-4 when a ball was misplayed in the RC infield allowing two runners to score.
  • In the home half of the inning, Watson singled to lead things off, went to second on a Kandrick bunt and scored on a Sumpter single to tie the game 5-5.
  • W&L scored three runs in the top of the ninth to take the lead for good, getting a two RBI single from Robey Smalley and a bases loaded walk from Ryan Monson to make it 8-5.
  • Kevin Ledford took the loss for RC, dropping his record to 0-2 on the season. Danny Devereux picked up the win after allowing one run in three innings of relief.
