Roanoke Sweeps ODAC Tournament Series From Lynchburg

Game 1

The Basics


Score: No. 15 Roanoke 10, Lynchburg 1
Records: Roanoke 28-9 | Lynchburg 15-23
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: Third-seeded Roanoke topped sixth-seeded Lynchburg 10-1 in the opening game of the best-of-three ODAC Tournament series, winning 10-1.

How it Happened

  • With LC leading 1-0 heading into the Roanoke fourth inning, Robbie Edwards and Eli Sumpter led off the inning with back-to-back singles and each moved up a base on passed ball. Gavin Kandrick then singled to plate both runners and put RC in front 2-1.
  • With two outs in the inning, Sean Guida was intentionally walked and he and Kandrick would move to second and third on a balk. Cody Shell then singled to score both and give RC a 4-1 lead.
  • With two outs and no one on in the Maroon fifth, Roanoke rallied for five runs, highlighted by a bases-loaded double by Shell that scored Guida, Will Smith and Dean Hermanson and made it 9-1 RC.
  • Roanoke tacked on a run in the eighth inning when Hermanson singled home Edwards and to give the Maroons a 10-1 advantage.
  • Fletcher Mazzola and Ethan Delahunty combined to allow just four hits to the Hornets in the game. Mazzola moved to 4-0 on the season after giving up three hits and one earned run in five innings of work. Delahunty went the final four innings to pick up his second save of the year. He gave up just one hit.
  • Hunter Campbell (0-6) started for LC and took the loss after giving up five runs in three innings.
  • Kandrick finished with three hits for RC, while Shell, Sumpter, Hermanson and Jack Howard each had two hits for the Maroons. Shell finished with five RBI.

Game 2

Score: No. 15 Roanoke 10, Lynchburg 4
Records: Roanoke 29-9 | Lynchburg 15-24
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: Roanoke took the series with a 10-4 victory in game two.  

How it Happened

  • Roanoke wasted no time taking a lead in game two when Guida opened the game with a triple and scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0. Later in the inning, Sam Watson would steal third base and score when LC's catcher overthrew the third baseman allowing Watson to score.
  • Kandrick homered to lead off the second inning and Watson would draw a bases-loaded walk, scoring Hermanson to push the RC lead to 4-0.
  • Lynchburg got a run back in the third inning, but the Maroons answered in the fifth inning with a pair of runs on a two-out single by Hermanson that scored Sumpter and Kandrick and made it 6-1.
  • With the score 7-1 in the Lynchburg seventh inning, the Hornets rallied for three runs highlighted by an Austin Keesee RBI double that scored a pair and an RBI single by Shawn Allen that made the score 7-4.
  • RC responded in the next half inning scoring three runs on back-to-back triples by Shell and Watson and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Howard that put RC in front 10-4.
  • Pat Burke picked up the win after going two innings in relief. He improved his record to 3-0 after giving up just one hit and striking out two.  Graham Boggio (5-4) took the loss for LC after surrendering four runs.
  • All nine Maroons had at least one hit in the win. Hermanson, Howard, Watson, Sumpter and Smith each had a pair.
