The Basics

Game 1
Score: Roanoke 14, Washington and Lee 6
Records: Roanoke 6-7, 3-0 ODAC | Washington and Lee 8-8, 2-4 ODAC
Location: Lexington, Va.

The Lead: Roanoke scored one or more runs in the first six innings to take the first game 14-6 over the Generals.

How it Happened:

  • In the top of the first, Roanoke strung together five singles, kick-started by a leadoff single from Will Smith. With two outs, Roanoke hit three straight singles, scoring three runs off RBIs from Gavin Kandrick, Hunter Andrews and Dean Hermanson to take an early 3-0 lead.
  • With the score 4-0 in the third, Hermanson hit a triple to left center to score Will Salva and Andrews. Jack Howard followed with a single, scoring Hermanson before Scott Ellis rounded out the scoring with a single to left to make it 8-0. 
  • Andrews hit a homer over the left field wall to tack on two more runs in the fourth. 
  • Ellis and Smith hit back to back doubles to start the fifth before Will Merriken hit a two run home run making it a 13-2 game. 
  • The Generals rallied for four runs in the final three innings but were only able to pull within 14-6. 
  • Kenny Mackovic started and gave up only two runs off six hits in the first four innings while striking out three. Chris Dudley tossed the next three innings, while Waring Garber threw the last two. 
  • Seven Maroons recorded multiple hits in the contest led by Andrews and Hermanson who tallied three RBI each. 
  • Matthew Jones was 3-for-5 for the Generals while Jason Volpicelli was 2-for-5 with two RBI.
  • Carson McKoon was tabbed with the loss giving up eight runs off 10 hits in 2.2 innings.

Game 2
Score: Roanoke 3, Washington and Lee 0
Records: Roanoke 7-7, 4-0 ODAC | Washington and Lee 8-9, 2-5 ODAC
Location: Lexington, Va.

The Lead: Roanoke shut out the Generals 3-0 in game two to secure the ODAC sweep.

How it Happened:

  • Will Salva and Gavin Kandrick hit back-to-back singles to start the top of the second inning before Hunter Andrews walked to load the bases. Dean Hermanson then lifted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Salva and give RC a 1-0 lead. 
  • Roanoke added another run in the top of the seventh with a sacrifice fly from Will Merriken, scoring Jack Howard who reached on a leadoff single. 
  • The Maroons added one more run in the top of the ninth with a two-out fielders choice off the bat of Kandrick that plated Will Smith
  • Cam Eck retired the Generals in order, with two strikeouts, in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win. 
  • Ben West pitched the first four innings allowing only four hits while striking out three before giving way to Kevin Ledford, who earned the win allowing only three hits in four innings. 
  • Smith was 3-for-5 to lead the Maroon offense while Kandrick and Howard both recorded two hits. 
  • For W&L, Volpicelli was 3-for-4  and Matt Whitely was 2-for-4. Kevin McHugh was tabbed with the loss giving up one run off two hits in the first two innings.
