Howard Named Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year; Four Maroons Earn All-Conference

Salem, Va. – Four Roanoke College standouts have been named to the 2019 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball All-Conference Team. 

Kevin Ledford and Will Smith were both named First-Team All-ODAC, while Gavin Kandrick and Jack Howard were named to the third-team. Howard earned the ODAC ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year recognition from the conference's sports information directors.

Howard, a senior from Leesburg, Va., stars both on and off the field for Roanoke. In the classroom, Howard owns a 3.90 grade point average as a business major. Soon to be a four-time member of the All-ODAC Academic Team, he is a perennial member of the Roanoke College Dean's List and President's List of Distinguished Students. On the field, Howard pairs this honor with an All-ODAC Third Team selection at third base.  Howard hit .295 this season with one home run and 26 RBI. He hit .341 in league play including 12 hits for extra bases. He also had a .417 on-base percentage and slugged at a .511 clip against league foes.

Ledford made 16 appearances out of the bullpen for the Maroons this season. He had a 4-1 overall record in addition to five saves which was second most in the ODAC. He struck out 39 batters in 36.1 innings of work. Opponents hit just .156 against Ledford for the year and he surrendered just three extra-base hits total. Ledford had a 1.50 ERA as he gave up just six earned runs all season.

Smith played in 38 games for the Maroons this season. He hit .285 with three home runs and 19 RBI. In league play he .320 with a pair of home runs and 15 RBI. Smith had 43 hits on the season, including 31 against ODAC opponents.

Kandrick hit .314 this season with 14 RBI. He had 38 hits, including 21 in ODAC competition. He had an on-base percentage of .420 and a slugging percentage of .364. Behind the plate, he was able to cut down 11 runners trying to steal.

Roanoke finished the season 21-18.
