Roanoke Defeats Ferrum 6-2 in Season Opener

The Lead:Emilee Wooten's hat trick lifted Roanoke to a 6-2 win over Ferrum in Friday night's season opener.

How it Happened:

  • Rebecca Schmidt contributed two goals and Julie van Marken added one for the Maroons, while Emma Clark made three saves in cage. 
  • Wooten gave Roanoke a 1-0 lead 12 minutes into the contest off a pass from Alexis Lester. Schmidt found the back of the cage five minutes later to make it a 2-0 game.
  • Van Marken gave Roanoke its final goal of the first half, assisted from Leonore Keunen, to head into halftime.
  • Wooten and Schmidt kicked off the second half with back-to-back goals at the 38 and 41 minute marks to extend the RC lead to 5-0.
  • The Panthers scored a pair of goals in the final 20 minutes of play but Clark made three saves to secure the win.
  • Roanoke outshot Ferrum 33-7 and held a 7-2 advantage on corners.
