Men's Basketball Game Notes vs. Lynchburg

After dropping three of its last four games, Roanoke looks to get back on the winning track against Lynchburg this Saturday. Game time is set for 7 p.m. following the women's basketball contest vs. Hollins at 4 p.m. in a Roanoke basketball doubleheader.
Series information vs. Lynchburg
Roanoke holds a 114-22 all-time series advantage over Lynchburg. The Maroons have swept the last three years (8-0) as the senior class has not lost to the Hornets. The Maroons won 91-34 in 2006-07 which tied a school-record for margin of victory (57, vs. LaGrange in 1991). Under Page Moir, the Maroons are 40-3 against the Hornets.
Last Meeting - Dec. 6, 2008 (76-57 W)
LYNCHBURG, Va. --- Roanoke defeated Lynchburg, 76-57 in ODAC action on Saturday afternoon. With the win the Maroons improved to 7-1, 2-0 in conference play while the Hornets dropped to 1-5, 1-2 in the ODAC.
The 7-1 start is the best since the 1999-00 season (13-0). The six-game win streak is the most since the middle of last season (7). It was the first meeting between Page Moir and Hilliary Scott as the Maroons are now 114-22 all-time against the Hornets. It was also the 10th-straight win for Roanoke in the series. Scott was a two-time All-American for the Maroons under Moir from 1990-94.
Roanoke dominated in the paint, outscoring Lynchburg 34-20 and never trailed as they controlled the tempo of the game throughout.
The Maroons jumped out to a 13-2 lead early in the first half and got ahead as much as 14 after a three-pointer by Melvin Felix to make it 37-23 with 2:19 left in the first half.
Lynchburg's Brad Puffenbarger hit three-straight three-pointers to cut the Maroon lead to seven, 39-32 just before the half. Drew Gaeng hit a three-pointer of his own to make it 42-32 at the break.
Lynchburg got within nine points after a conventional three-point play by Mason Woolridge with 18:37 remaining. They didn't get any closer for the rest of the game.
After Puffenbarger hit both free throws to make it 61-50 with 7:27 left, Roanoke went on an 11-2 run to increase its lead to 72-52 at the 4:32 mark.
Curtis Peery finished with 14 points and four rebounds as he now only four points from passing Kevinn Hunter and Jason Strickland for 28th on the all-time scoring list (1,019).
Zach Milton finished with a season-high of 13 points along with three rebounds while Corey Poindexter had 11 points and five assists. William Sheppard tied a career-high with eight points while Logan Singleton finished with a season-best four points. Papa Fall and Dustin DeMaria saw action for the first time this season as Fall had two points and two rebounds while DeMaria pulled down his first collegiate rebound of his career.
Last Time Out - at Guilford Jan. 28, 2009
GREENSBORO, NC --- Guilford held off Roanoke's late surge to pull off a 77-72 victory on Wednesday evening. The loss dropped the Maroons to 15-4, 7-3 in the ODAC while the Quakers improved to 14-4, 7-2 in the ODAC. The win puts Guilford in sole possession of second in the latest ODAC standings.
Guilford has won 10 of its last 13 games and rebounded from a 69-66 loss at Bridgewater last weekend. The Quakers are now 5-4 against the Maroons since 2005, but Roanoke leads the all-time series, 38-14. Moir hasn't won in Greensboro since the 2005-06 season.
Roanoke jumped out to a 14-8 lead in the first seven minutes of the game before the Quakers took the lead for good on an 18-4 run to make it, 26-18 with 2:12 remaining in the half.
Clay Henson scored the first basket of the second half to make it, 28-21 before Parrish Walker and Curtis Peery combined for 12 points during a 15-8 run. Walker's second three-pointer during that span tied the contest at 36-all with 15-minutes remaining.
Roanoke tied the game twice more before Guilford pulled away with a 12-1 run to take a game-high 11-point lead, 54-43 with eight minutes left.
The Maroons didn't go away quietly as they pulled to within three with less than three-seconds left after Walkers' third three-pointer of the night. Rhett Bonner sank both of his free throws to win and move into second in the ODAC.
Peery finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season for the Maroons. He is now 23rd all-time on the career scoring list with 1,115 points, only three behind 2006 graduate Jared Butler.
Walker had 17 points and hit 3-of-5 from beyond the arc in front of his hometown crowd. Melvin Felix tossed in 16 points while Drew Gaeng chipped in nine points along with four rebounds. Aaron Tyson blocked three shots to move into a tie for eighth al-time at Roanoke (65). He is one block away from 31, which is tied for 10th in single-season blocks.
Guilford's Bonner led all scorers with 21 points, hitting 9-of-10 from the line along with five rebounds. Tyler Sandborn had a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds in addition to three blocks and 9-of-10 from the line as well. Clay Henson had 17 points and Grabriel Lowder tossed in 11 points.
About the Maroons (15-4, 7-3 ODAC)
Curtis Peery leads the Maroons with 18.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game in addition to team-highs in field goal percentage (55.4%) and free-throw percentage (84.2%). His 1,197 points are 21st on the career scoring list at Roanoke.
Melvin Felix is second in scoring (11 ppg) and is second in free-throw percentage (80.5%). He has hit 15 three-pointers this season (31.9%) in addition to 36 assists. Parrish Walker is posting 10.8 points and 3.9 rebounds per game and leads the team in steals (35) and second in assists with 42.
Drew Gaeng (6 ppg) leads the team in three-point percentage (41.9%), 26 three-pointers made and 56 assists. He is second in steals (42) in addition to shooting 84.2% from the free-throw line. Aaron Tyson's 62 blocked shots are tied for 10th all-time at Roanoke. He has a team-high 27 on the year in addition to 5.4 rebounds per game.
Scouting the Hornets (3-13, 1-8 ODAC)
The Hornets took a pair of losses this past week, falling to Hampden-Sydney and Emory & Henry to make it seven-straight losses since Jan. 2. Steven Echols had a solid game against H-SC, notching 22 points, six boards and six assists. He scored 20 of his points in the second half with 19 coming in the final 12-plus minutes. Mason Wooldridge added 17 points. Wooldridge led four Hornets in double figures with 22 points against E&H. K.C. Mendez had 16 markers while Echols and Seah Sutherland added a dozen points each. They are winless on the road (0-10) this season. Wooldridge averaged 16.7 points and 7.9 rebounds to lead the Hornets. Echols averages 13.4 points while leading the team with 68 assists and 34 steals.
Roanoke Ranked Nationally in Two Stat Categories
Roanoke men's basketball is ranked in the top-40 among NCAA Div. III teams in scoring offense and assists per game in the latest statistical rankings. The Maroons are averaging 80.1 points (39th) and 16.3 assists per game (33rd) in addition to a 1.07 assist-to-turnover ratio which is ranked 59th. Senior Drew Gaeng is ranked 23rd nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.43) and is ranked among the top of the ODAC in that category.
Moir DIII News Coach of the Month
Head Coach Page Moir (347-184), in his 20th season at Roanoke, was named DIII News Coach of the Month. He is the school's all-time winningest coach in addition to the most career wins among active ODAC Coaches. He is second all-time in the conference in ODAC wins (221) and third in career wins (347). The 1994 ODAC Coach of the Year is tied with Roanoke coaching legend Ed Green in ODAC Tournament wins (23).
Roanoke Ranked #26 in D3Hoops.com Poll
Roanoke men's basketball received 40 votes and is one spot out of the D3Hoops.com Top-25 Poll announced this morning. It ended a streak of three weeks in the Top-25, the longest since the 1999-00 season.
The Maroons have been in or received votes in the top-25 for seven-straight weeks this season, which is the longest since nine last season. Roanoke is 15-3 overall, 7-2 in ODAC, which is second in the latest standings. They have the second-highest scoring offense in the conference behind Emory & Henry, who is ranked nationally in that category.
Record Watch
Senior forward Aaron Tyson is now ninth all-time at Roanoke in career blocked shots. He comes into tonight's game with 65 for his career. Curtis Peery passed Shane Abernathy '85 with 1,215 career points to move into 20th on the career scoring list.
