Roanoke Falls to Emory & Henry in Regular Season Finale, 96-91
EMORY, Va. --- Roanoke dropped a heartbreaker, 96-91 against Emory & Henry at the King Center on Bob Johnson Court on Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale. The Maroons end the regular season with a 6-19 record overall, 3-13 in the ODAC. The Wasps finished their regular season with a 4-21 mark, 2-14 in conference play.
Both teams shot over 50% for the game, but the difference for the Maroons came at the free-throw line, as they were 19-of-29 (65.5%). The Wasps were hot from beyond the arc, shooting 14-for-29 (48.3%). EHC outrebounded RC, 37-32 and outscored them, 28-15 in points off turnovers.
With 10 ties and only three lead changes, it was a battle for both teams as the lead only exceeded 10 points once (28-17 RC 9:48 first half). EHC held a 5-4 lead early before a three-pointer by Parrish Walker (Greensboro, NC, Dudley)gave the Maroons the lead which sparked a 13-2 run to give them a 10-point lead, 17-7.
Roanoke maintained the score around 10 points and were up 35-25 before the Wasps went on a 12-2 run to tie the contest with 3:31 remaining. Both teams traded buckets the rest of the half as Logan Singleton (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley)layup sent the Maroons into halftime with a slim, 44-42 advantage.
Scoring 12 of the first 18 points of the second half, Roanoke built an eight-point lead, 56-48, at the 17:06 mark. Emory & Henry slowly came back to erase the Maroons' lead and tie the contest at 76-all with 9:29 left.
From that point on there were six ties and two lead changes to end the game. With EHC up, 86-82, Roanoke Walker hit a layup followed by two made free-throws by Matt Crizer (Covington, VA, Alleghany)to tie the score with 3:50 remaining.
Both teams continued to trade baskets with each other in one of the best games of the season for Roanoke. Down 92-90, the Maroons missed one of two free throw attempts as Emory & Henry's Malcolm Green was fouled and sank both free throws to give his team a three-point advantage and held on to win its fourth game of the season.
The Maroons had five players score in double-figures today. Walker led the Maroons with 23 points, one shy of tying his season-high. He shot 9-of-12 from the floor and dished out five assists. Corey Poindexter (Pulaski, VA, Pulaski County/Hargrave)finished with a season-best 14 points, two shy of tying his career-high, along with a season-best five rebounds and three assists.
Crizer added 13 points and four rebounds. His one three-pointer today tied him for 10th on the single-season list with 48 treys on the year. Singleton scored in double-figures for the second-straight game with 12 points and pulled down a team-best six rebounds. Kendrick Chittock (Auburn, OH, University School)tossed in 12 makers.
Terrance Grigg led all players with 25 points and 10 rebounds along with three assists to pace the Wasps. Josh Ringey came off the bench to score 24 points, including 7-for-10 from downtown. JD Dyson had 15 points, 12 assists and five steals while Noah Hayden chipped in 13 counters.
The men will travel next week to Lynchburg College to take on the Hornets in the ODAC Tournament play-in game. The Maroons went 1-1 against Hilliary Scott's squad this season. Tip-off is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m.
