Roanoke Falls to Frostburg State, 87-67
Salem, VA --- Roanoke dropped its first game of the 2009-10 campaign to Frostburg State University, 67-87, Friday night in the second game of the 16th Annual V-Foundation Classic. The Maroons fell to 1-1 while the Bobcats improved to 2-0 following the first ever meeting between the two foes.
Frostburg State shot 52.5-percent from the field while never trailing in the contest. The Bobcats out-rebounded Roanoke 51-30 and handed out 22 assists against 10 for the Maroons.
Senior Kendrick Chittock (Auburn, OH, University School)led Roanoke with 16 points to go with nine rebounds. Seven of his boards came via the offensive glass in leading Roanoke to a 20-10 advantage in second-chance points. Junior Corey Poindexter (Pulaski, VA, Pulaski County/Hargrave)also reached double figures with 10 markers, and Freshman Kwasi Amponsah (Woodbridge, VA, Garfield)notched nine points. Junior Melvin Felix (Caguas, Puerto Rico, Salem)made his season debut with seven points.
Guard Nick Sefcik led all scorers with 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting including a 5-of-9 showing from three-point range. He also dished out 12 assists and snared six rebounds. Terrance Taylor added 21 points and eight boards, and Brian Anderson chipped in 19 points and five assists.
The first seven minutes of the contest featured back and forth leads of three and five points for Frostburg State. Roanoke broke the trend following a lay-up by Chittock to pull the Maroons within one at 17-16 with 13:20 to play in the half. The Bobcats went on a 13-5 run to move out to a 30-21 advantage following a three-pointer by Busha Koffa at the 7:45 mark.
A lay-in by Taylor at 4:39 gave the Bobcats an 11 point lead. Two free throws from Poindexter and jumpers from Parrish Walker (Greensboro, NC, Dudley)and Logan Singleton (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley)helped pare Roanoke's deficit to seven points, but Frostburg State closed the half on an 8-0 run to take a 44-30 lead into the intermission.
A three-pointer by Sefcik and a jumper by Jamal Bracken moved Frostburg out to a 19 point lead in the first 1:30 of the second half. The Bobcats quick spurt triggered Roanoke into a 13-4 run to pull within 10 at 53-43 with 13:13 to play. Four points from Chittock and a three-point play from sophomore Michael McGeough (Danville, VA, George Washington)highlighted the Maroons streak.
Frostburg State regained control over the next several minutes, moving out to a 63-46 lead following a pair of free throws by Taylor with 9:01 to go. A three-pointer by Chittock and a jumper by Felix brought Roanoke within 12 points with 8:33 on the clock.

Over the next three minutes the Bobcats moved their lead back out to 16 points. A lay-up by Amponsah with 5:48 to play pulled Roanoke to within 13 at 70-57. Frostburg again found its stride with a 10-3 run to go up 20 with 3:03 remaining, and provided the Bobcats with the cushion it needed through the final horn.
Roanoke is back in action on Saturday, November 21, in the final game of the V-Foundation Classic. The Maroons take on the University of Mary Washington at 3:00 p.m. in the C. Homer Bast Center. Frostburg State pairs with Lynchburg College at 1:00 p.m.
