Guilford Escapes Roanoke with 72-70 Overtime Win
SALEM, Va--- Roanoke dropped a hard fought, 72-70 overtime decision to Guilford Wednesday evening at the Bast Center. The Maroons fell to 8-11, 4-7 in conference play, while the Quakers improved to 14-7, 8-4 in the ODAC.
The win marked the fourth-straight for Guilford in the series, the longest streak for the Quakers. GC outscored the Maroons, 33-10 off the bench, 13-7 in second chance points and 20-14 in the paint. They held a slight edge in rebounding (48-47).
Roanoke shot 19-of-29 from the line tonight, 37.3% overall. The young men showed true grit in the second half, shooting 13-for-23 (56.5%) including 5-of-9 from three-point range to bring the Maroons back in the game and force overtime.
In a contest that featured two of the league's third and fourth leading scorers in Josh Pittman (18.2 ppg) and Melvin Felix (Caguas, Puerto Rico, Salem) (17.1 ppg), the story of the game was Logan Singleton (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley). Singleton finished with a career-high 26 points (19 in second half), shooting 10-of-18 from the field, 3-of-3 from behind the arc. He added six boards to his stellar performance.
Guilford raced out to an 11-3 lead midway through the first period behind five early points from guard Gabrielle Lower. Roanoke cut the lead to 18-14 on a Jack Hamilton (Arlington, VA, St, Stephen's St. Agnes) jumper, capping an 11-4 run. The Quakers finished the half on a 17-6 run to take a 35-20 halftime lead.
The visitors continued to pull away as they led by as many as 17 with just over six minutes left in regulation. The Maroons mounted a furious comeback, closing the second stanza on a 21-4 run. It was capped by a Matt Crizer (Covington, VA, Alleghany) three-pointer to send the game into overtime.
In the extra period, the Maroons took their first lead of the contest off an old fashioned three-point play by Singleton just 10-seconds in. The Quakers, who knocked off two top-10 teams over the past week, closed the game out by hitting 6-of-6 free throws in the extra period and took the lead for good. RC had an open look at the game-winner but Crizer's shot rimmed out of the cylinder and Guilford escaped with a big ODAC victory to keep them fourth in the conference standings.
Ethan Humphries (Buchanan, VA, James River) did a great job of hounding Guilford's leading scorer Pittman, holding him to just seven points off of 3-of-14 shooting. Lowder led three players in double-figures for the Quakers with 20 points and nine rebounds. T.C. Anderson added 11 markers, while Brad Monroe chipped in 10 points and four boards.

Hamilton had a break out game for the Maroons, finishing with career-highs of 15 points and nine boards. Crizer tossed in 10 counters and four boards, while Humphries contributed a career-high six assists on the night.

The Maroons will travel to the Tidewater area this weekend as they take on Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday followed by a non-conference match-up with Christopher Newport on Sunday.
