Poindexter's Tip-in Propels Roanoke over Emory & Henry in ODAC Action
SALEM, Va--- Corey Poindexter (Pulaski, VA, Pulaski County/Hargrave) tip-in capped a comeback win over Emory & Henry, 75-74 Wednesday evening at the Bast Center. The Maroons improved to 9-13, 5-8 in conference play, while the Wasps fell to 4-18, 1-12 in the ODAC.
With the victory Roanoke swept the season-series with Emory & Henry. They improved to 68-41 all-time against the visiting Wasps. The Maroons used a 21-14 advantage in points off turnovers to edge E&H. Roanoke also outscored Emory & Henry, 34-24 in the paint.
Logan Singleton (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley) led the Maroons with another stellar night. Coming off a career-high 32 points and 16 rebounds the junior continued his hot shooting as he scorched E&H for 28 points and 12 boards. It was his fourth double-double and the fourth time he scored over 20 points this season.
Both teams battled throughout the first half shown by three lead changes. Roanoke jumped out to an early 14-10 lead before Emory and Henry battled back. Down 34-27 with two minutes to play, the Maroons closed the half on a 7-2 run to pull within two heading into the locker room.
Roanoke came out hot in the second stanza as Melvin Felix (Caguas, Puerto Rico, Salem) opened the half with two consecutive layups. Emory & Henry's Terrance Grigg responded with three-straight layups of his own to give his team a four-point lead before a Kwasi Amponsah (Woodbridge, VA, Garfield) steal and dunk brought RC within two.
Down 74-67 with three minutes remaining the Maroons mounted a comeback to take the lead 75-74 on a Poindexter tip-in with 46-seconds remaining. Felix paced the Maroons during the run with four points and an assist in the final two minutes of the game.
Grigg led the way for the Wasps, tossing in 24 points, including 18 in the second half. He added four rebounds and three assists on the contest. Jorel Terrell tossed in 11 points, three rebounds and two steals.
Felix contributed 13 points and four assists, while Amponsah finished with 11 points and three dimes on the contest. Joey Leech (Elliston, VA, Eastern Montgomery) provided a spark off the bench chipping in eight points and four rebounds.
The Maroons return to action Saturday February 12th as they host #11 Randolph-Macon (19-3). Tip-off is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start.
