Hampden-Sydney Pulls Away Late in ODAC Victory over Roanoke
Hampden-Sydney defeated Roanoke, 85-70 in ODAC (Old Dominion Athletic Conference) men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Bast Center. The Tigers improve to 10-3, 4-1 in the ODAC, while the Maroons record slips to 4-8, 0-3 in conference play.

The Maroons entered today's game two wins shy of program win #1,300 in the 99-year history of the sport at RC. Today's game also showcased three of the top-four scorers in the league. H-SC's Harrison George (19.2ppg) along with RC's Kwasi Amponsah (18.8ppg) and Logan Singleton (17.5ppg) top the ODAC in that category.

A Singleton block and a layup on the other end of the court gave the Maroons their only lead of the afternoon. He finished with 13 points by the end of the first half.

Hampden-Sydney, which has won eight of the last 11 meetings, jumped out to a commanding 26-8 lead as they capped a 26-6 run over the next seven minutes of action.

Roanoke, which have won three of their last five coming into today, battled back to cut their deficit to within 12 at the half, 43-31. Down 19 with 2:38 to go before the half, the Maroons closed the half scored seven unanswered points to have momentum heading into the locker room.

Amponsah scored 11 points in the first five minutes of play to close to within single-digits. Clay Lacy and Amponsah added a three-pointers to make it a five-point ballgame with 15-minutes remaining, capping a 21-7 run.

The Tigers, who have won seven of their last eight contests, extended their lead led by George who scored six of eight unanswered Tiger points to make it 58-45 with 12-minutes left.

Singleton quickly kept the Maroons within striking distance in just one minute of play. His conventional three-point play off a fast break dunk from Julian Ramirez and a three-pointer put them back within seven, 58-51.

Both teams traded baskets over the ensuing four minutes before H-SC went on a 12-2 run to pull away in the final minutes.

George led all scorers with 28 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and five steals for Hampden-Sydney. Ben Jesse totaled 15 points while Kobi Williamson and Randall Ward tallied 11 points each.

Singleton led Roanoke with 23 points, six rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals. Amponsah finished with 18 points, 16 in the second half, along with tying a career-high five steals. He hit 7-of-8 from the line and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Jack Hamilton added six points, seven rebounds and four assists to tie a career-best.

The men will return to ODAC action on Wednesday, Jan. 11 as they will host Washington and Lee to complete their five-game home stand. The Generals defeated the Maroons, 73-66 last month in Lexington, but Page Moir is 37-10 against the W&L in his career. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Bast Center.
