The Lead: Roanoke scored seven of the final eight points in the final 3:35 of the game to rally past Guilford 64-62 Wednesday evening in Greensboro, N.C.
How it Happened
- After a Will Freeman layup put GC up 46-31 with 14:17 to play in the game, the Maroons would outscore the Quakers 26-10 over the course of the next nine minutes and took 57-56 advantage on a John Caldwell jumper with just over five minutes to play.
- Guilford would score the next five points to retake a 61-57 advantage with 3:35 to go in the game.
- A Caldwell three-point play with 2:25 to go sparked what proved to be the decisive run that saw Caldwell score the final five points.
- Guilford had two attempts to tie the game or take the lead but Cameron Smith got a steal on the first possession. Then after a Guilford stand on the offensive end, Roanoke got a defensive stop as time expired secure the win.
- Caldwell led the way for RC with 14 points. Joey Miller had 13 points, while John Fitchett had 11 and Smith finished with 10.
- Caldwell grabbed 10 rebounds, while Smith nabbed seven boards. The Maroons were 25-of-64 (39.1%) from the field for the game.
- Guilford was led by Alston Thompson who had a game-high 16 points, while Freeman finished with 14.
